Jr. Tips Tab Turner Stevenson
EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Silvertips have announced today that Turner Stevenson has been named head coach of the Everett Jr. Silvertips Under-16 AAA program of the North American Prospects Hockey League. Stevenson, a 13-year veteran and Stanley Cup winning forward in the National Hockey League, immediately assumes head coaching responsibilities of the midget level club.
The Jr. Silvertips are scheduled to host open tryouts April 29-30 and May 1 at the Community Ice Rink of XFINITY Arena, located in downtown Everett at 2000 Hewitt Avenue. Scheduled ice time will be announced soon and registration will open tomorrow, Apr. 19 at registration.everettyouthhockey.com.
“With Turner’s 13 years of experience playing at the highest level in the world, the NHL, we’re extremely pleased to welcome his knowledge, leadership, and credentials to the Silvertips family,” said Jr. Silvertips 16U AAA general manager Scott Brihn. “He has continued to build his resume in the coaching ranks at numerous levels and with his experience, he will be able to provide the appropriate structure to prepare players for advancement to the next level.”
Stevenson, 43, adds to his coaching resume with two previous seasons as an assistant coach in the Western Hockey League with the Seattle Thunderbirds (2007-08) and North American Hockey League with the Wenatchee Wild (2011-12). He helped guide the clubs to a combined record of 78-40-14 in his two seasons behind the bench, adding to experience with several rep level teams across youth hockey.
The native of Prince George, B.C. suited up in 644 career games as a forward in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Philadelphia Flyers with 190 points (75g-115a) and 969 penalty minutes. He hoisted the Stanley Cup as a member of New Jersey in 2002-03, skating in 23 postseason games with four points (1g-3a).
For his career in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he suited up in 67 games to go with 18 points (6g-12a). The coaches he has suited up for in his NHL career include Pat Burns, Larry Robinson, and Alain Vigneault.
“I’m very excited and honored to be the new head coach of the Under-16 midget team,” said Stevenson. “With the rapidly changing landscape locally and regionally, this with help me continue to be a part of advancing the growth of hockey in our area for the elite player and their families. The NAPHL gives our local and regional players the best opportunity to play in a league that will help them been seen at multiple events by junior and college scouts from all over the country.”
Stevenson, a resident of the Seattle area, suited up in 246 career games over four seasons (1988-1992) in the Western Hockey League with the Thunderbirds, registering 203 points (100g-103a) and 846 penalty minutes. He was named WHL (West) First Team All-Star and Canadian Hockey League Second Team All-Star in 1991-92 when he had 52 points (20g-32a) and 304 penalty minutes in 58 games with the Thunderbirds, host of the Memorial Cup that season.
Stevenson was selected by Montreal in the first round (12th overall) in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in 1992-93, a club eventually capturing their 24th Stanley Cup title.
