Tips Close Preseason In SO Defeat
EVERETT, Wash. – Riley Sutter and Spencer Gerth each logged multi-point games, but Layne Bensmiller’s goal in the second round stood as the winner with the Seattle Thunderbirds sneaking past the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 in a shootout at XFINITY Arena in preseason action on Saturday.
The Silvertips closed preseason play at 2-3-0-2, forcing overtime in each of their last three games. Mario Petit took the shootout loss on 12 stops. The Silvertips outshot the Thunderbirds 39-15. Sutter, Brett Kemp, and Sean Richards each scored for Everett.
The scoring got started by Cavin Leth of Seattle putting in a short-handed goal with a breakaway off the assist by Reece Harsch at 4:15 into play. The Tips took advantage of another power play when a wraparound attempt was blocked, but Spencer Gerth was able to pick up the rebound and feed Riley Sutter who put the tying goal into the back of the net at 10:45.
Four minutes later, Kemp put the Tips up a goal after scoring on another power play. He was fed by Bryce Kidnap and Kevin Davis coming down the right side, and Kemp sealed the lead with a wrister over Ryan Gilchrist’s glove. The Silvertips also outshot Seattle 12-1 in the first period.
The Thunderbirds were able to tie the game at 2-2 after Bensmiller scored his first preseason goal as a Thunderbird, putting in a pass by Calvin Leth to the front of the net at 3:38. Only eight seconds later, the Tips responded.
Sean Richards took a pass by Riley Sutter from the right circle with another assist by Spencer Gerth, putting the tips back up by a goal, 3-2 on a cross-ice finish. The next goal, another power play marker, was scored by Thunderbird Sami Moilanen at 10:15 to tie the game again.
The Silvertips defense shut down the Thunderbirds offense in the third period, allowing only three shots on goal. The Tips, on the other hand, put up 13 shots on goal, but back-up goalie Carl Stankowski entered in the third period and was able to stop all of them, sending the game into overtime.
Bensmiller provided Seattle’s only shootout goal and Connor Dewar was stopped on a deke in the top of the third round to seal the game.
