BAILLIE NAMED DENNY’S WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CALGARY, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets forward Tyson Baillie is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 3rd, 2015.
Baillie collected seven points (2g-5a) in four games to help the Kelowna Rockets pick up three victories and win the WHL Western Conference Championship against the Portland Winterhawks in six games.
On Tuesday, April 28th against the Winterhawks, Baillie notched a pair of assists in the Rockets’ 7-3 loss. The following night, Baillie collected an assist to help the Rockets bounce back to earn a 3-2 victory over Portland which tied the series at two games apiece. On Friday, May 1st, Baillie was the hero as he scored the overtime winner to give the Rockets a 2-1 win over the ‘Hawks while claiming third star honours. On Sunday May 3rd, Baillie gathered three points (1g-2a) to lead the Rockets to an 8-4 victory which clinched the series and propelled Kelowna to the 2015 WHL Championship Series.
The 19-year-old Fort Saskatchewan, AB native gathered 76 points (37g-39a) while playing in 68 games this season for the Rockets. The 5’10, 195 lb forward is in his fourth WHL campaign with Kelowna and has amassed 215 points (95g-120a) in 259 career WHL regular season contests. In 42 career WHL Playoff games, Baillie has recorded 49 points (22g-27a) to go along with a plus-23 rating.
The WHL has also nominated Jordan Papirny of the Brandon Wheat Kings for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Papirny, a 1996-born netminder from Edmonton, AB, recorded a pair of wins last week in the WHL Eastern Conference Championship against the Calgary Hitmen while posting a 2.29 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. On Tuesday, April 28th, Papirny turned aside 30 of 32 shots while claiming second star honours in a losing effort as the Wheat Kings fell in Game 3 to Calgary 2-1 in overtime. The following night, Papirny had a solid performance as he stopped 28 shots to lift the Wheat Kings to an 8-3 victory in Game 4. On Friday, May 1st, Papirny was consistent once again as he made 31 saves in the Wheat Kings’ 8-2 series-clinching win over the Hitmen while earning third star honours.
