Rockets defenceman Sean Comrie settling into Kelowna
Kelowna Rockets defenceman Sean Comrie took to the ice at Prospera Place for the first time Saturday morning soaking in every minute of it. The 19-year-old had been waiting for more than three months for that very moment.
The Rockets acquired Comrie’s playing rights from the Brandon Wheat Kings at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft on May 2. He was originally drafted 44th overall in the second round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft by the Brandon Wheat Kings but played for the University of Denver last season. The Edmonton product signed a standard Western Hockey League Player Agreement with the Rockets on May 14.
Comrie has been paired with Cayde Augustine during scrimmages over the first couple of days of camp. Head coach Adam Foote says that he has liked what he has seen from Comrie over the first few days.
“I love what I’ve seen so far,” said head coach Adam Foote. “We had a pretty good idea of what he can bring. His demeanour is a calming demeanour, which I really like. I think as a defenceman calm equals fast, he’s going to make us stronger and give us depth.”
The 6’0, 165-pound defender has been getting adjusted to making the move to Kelowna but says that it didn’t take long to know all of the new faces and feel at home.
“I’ve adjusted pretty fast,” said Comrie. “I moved in with my billet family last week, and I got to know them and their family. Then I met all of the guys and coaches and management. The coaches are pretty hands-on, they’ll tell you what you need to do to be better and be pretty straight forward with that.”
Comrie admits that the game is played a little bit differently in the WHL compared to what he was playing last season.
“It’s a little bit of a different style of game I’ve noticed. It’s a little more physical, but there are also younger players in this league so I might have an upper edge on them when it comes to size and maturity.”
