OKANAGAN HOCKEY ACADEMY CAPTURES JOHN REID MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT TITLE
The Okanagan Hockey Academy defeated the L.A. Jr. Kings 6-3 on Sunday in the championship game of the John Reid Memorial Tournament. The OHA outlasted 15 other teams from across Western Canada, the United States and Europe to earn the title.
The tournament, in it’s 36th installment, is an annual Bantam AAA tournament featuring some of the best young hockey talent from around the world. Many of the players featured in this tournament will likely end up as Western Hockey League draft picks this year at the upcoming 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. In 2013, 94 players drafted in the WHL Bantan Draft were JRMT participants. In addition, an impressive 37 of the first 44 picks in the 2013 Bantam Draft played in the 2013 edition of the tournament.
The top 3 scorers in the Western Hockey League this season – Mitch Holmberg, Nicolas Petan and Josh Wynquist – all attended the annual Bantam classic in years past. Unfortunately, Petan was unable to play for his NSWC team in 2009 due to injury.
Tournament All-Stars were selected, and Tournament Awards were given based on player performance over the 4-day tournament. 3 forwards, 2 defencemen and 1 goaltender were selected from each division.
