Cowan’s heroics, 45 saves not enough as Chiefs lose heartbreaking shootout to Rebels
Spokane, Wash. — It was a fierce, defensive showcase on Saturday night as the Chiefs hosted the Rebels of Red Deer. Spokane started the game strong registering 11 shots on goal in the first period to Red Deer’s 8 but were outshot 37-15 the rest of the way. Dawson Cowan stood on his head and was a brick wall at the back of Spokane’s defense, making impressive stop after stop to keep the Chief’s hopes alive in this one.
Both teams managed two shots in a tense overtime period before the game ended in a stalemate, and headed to a shootout. First star and the game puck went to Cowan in this one who registered his second shutout of his young career.
Took it to a shootout, but not the result we wanted. Nothing but love for DC – 45 saves tonight and first star ⭐️ #GoChiefsGo pic.twitter.com/JuIhz3phSi

Berkly Catton, Tommy De Luca, and Cade Hayes were all unsuccessful in their shootout attempts and Cowan was finally beaten on Red Deer’s second attempt of the shootout, by 20-year-old veteran Ben King.
The vast majority of this one was played at full strength with only a total of five minor penalties called all game. The Chiefs went to the box twice in the first period and stayed disciplined the rest of the game. The Rebels were also penalized twice in the first, and then once in the second with the entire third period and overtime played even.
