Chiefs Make It Two In A Row With 6-2 Win At Saskatoon
Kailer Yamamoto scored two goals and Dawson Weatherill turned away 28 shots on Wednesday night as the Spokane Chiefs won their second straight game on their East Division trip with a 6-2 victory over the Saskatoon Blades. Spokane has now won seven-straight against Saskatoon in their annual meetings, having last lost to the Blades January 5, 2010.
The Chiefs would jump out to a 1-0 lead on an Ethan McIndoe power play goal at 10:43 of the first period. McIndoe’s second goal on the East trip was set up by Keanu Yamamoto and Curtis Miske, who scored his first assist of the season. Spokane would extend the lead to 2-0 in the second period on Trent Huitema’s first career goal at 3:07. Hayden Ostir picked up his first point of the season with an assist and McIndoe also picked up a point on the tally. Kailer Yamamoto would get his first goal of the night from Hudson Elyniuk at 9:51 to put the Chiefs up 3-0. Saskatoon would get on the board at 17:01 to cut the lead to 3-1 after two. Spokane killed six Saskatoon power plays in the second period on their way to a 9-9 performance on the penalty kill on the night.
The two teams would be on a 4 on 4 in the first minute of the third period and Yamamoto would score his second of the night on Miske’s second assist of the game only 42 seconds into the stanza as the Chiefs took a 4-1 lead. Riley McKay would score his first career goal on Taylor Ross’ first assist of the season at 2:17 to extend the advantage to 5-1 Spokane. Former Chief Kolten Olynek scored for Saskatoon at 4:53 to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-2, but Pavel Kousal’s third goal as a Chief at 9:43 of the third capped the scoring. Ross got his second assist of the night and McKay got his first assist of his career.
Spokane and Saskatoon each put up 30 shots in the game, as the Chiefs power play went 1 for 2 and the penalty kill was a perfect 9 for 9. Spokane is now 4 points back of third place Portland in the U.S. Division and 5 ahead of Seattle. The Chiefs will seek their third straight win on the eastern swing as they travel to Prince Albert to face the Raiders Friday night at 6 p.m PDT.
