CHIEFS WITHSTAND HURRICANES, PUSH STREAK TO FIVE
SPOKANE, Wash. – Jordan Henderson scored his first career WHL goal on Saturday night as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes, 2-1. It was Spokane’s 5th consecutive victory and pushed them into a tie with the Portland Winterhawks for 2nd Place in the U.S. Division.
The Chiefs got on the board first when Curtis Miske used some nifty stickhandling to get through the right circle and threw a centering pass toward Lethbridge goaltender Stuart Skinner. The puck deflected off Skinner’s pad and was then redirected into the net by the skate of Jacob Cardiff as he crashed the net, scoring his 2nd goal of the season.
After a scoreless 2nd Period, Henderson punched in his goal after team-leading scorer Adam Helewka centered the puck with a backhand pass from the corner. The rookie defenseman from Vancouver, BC, deflected it past Skinner to extend the Chiefs’ lead to 2-0.
Spokane goaltender Tyson Verhelst was 30 seconds away from his first career shutout, but Lethbridge’s Tyler Wong scored to put the Hurricanes on the board.
The Chiefs outshot the ‘Canes 39-26 on the night and both teams were scoreless on the power play; Spokane was 0 for 2 and Lethbridge was 0 for 4.
Spokane hits the road for a U.S. Division showdown with the Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday evening. Mike Boyle will have the call on CBS SportsRadio 1510 KGA with the pre-game show beginning at 4:30 p.m.
