PREVIEW: Chiefs to host defending WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings Friday night
Spokane, Wash. — The Spokane Chiefs look to bounce back this weekend as they host the defending WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings at Spokane Arena Friday night. It’s the first time the teams are facing each other since the 2018-19 season.
17-year-old forward Kooper Gizowski leads the team in scoring, with six points (1G-5A) in three games. The Edmonton native is already just two points away from his 2021-22 season total (4G-4A). Mac Gross, Raegan Wiles, Chase Bertholet, Ty Cheveldayoff and Saige Weinstein all have three points apiece over the first three games of the season, with Gross leading the way in goals (3).
The Chiefs’ 2022 CHL Import Draft pick, Tommaso De Luca (ITA), got off to a hot start by scoring his first WHL career goal in his league debut on September 23 in Victoria. He followed that up with a pair of assists in the next game and one assist in Saturday’s home opener.
The Chiefs welcomed 7,572 fans into Spokane Arena for Saturday’s game, the highest home opener attendance across the WHL so far (Tri-City Americans and Winnipeg ICE still have yet to play their home openers).
