Blades unveil 2026 Training Camp rosters presented by Motion Fitness

77 players attending camp, including eight picks from 2026 WHL Prospects Draft

Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatoon Blades announced the roster for 2026 Training Camp presented by Motion Fitness on Thursday. The event returns to SaskTel Centre for the first time since 2024 from Friday, Aug. 28 to Sunday, Aug. 30. The camp roster consists of 46 forwards, 23 defencemen, and eight goaltenders. Eight of the nine players selected by the Blades at the 2026 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft will attend the camp: forwards Teagan Dernisky, Mason West, Joshua Koehler, Brayden Lindsay, and Carson Brown; defencemen Hayden Harvey and Jack Arseniuk, and goalie Blake Pickens. Additionally, ten of Saskatoon's selections from the 2025 WHL drafts are slated to attend, including 15th overall pick Kain Martiniuk. The Blades' 2026 first-round pick in Dernisky will attend his first ever WHL training camp. The 5-foot-7 winger was drafted 15th overall after torching the Canadian Sport School Hockey U15 Prep League (CSSHL) offensively with Yale Hockey Academy in 2025-26. Dernisky led the league in goals (43), assists (55), points (98), powerplay goals (13), and game-winning goals (7) in 30 games. The Delta, BC native continued his scoring ways in three playoff games with a trio of goals and assists.The 15-year-old speedster was an animal in tournament play during the 2025-26 campaign. In six games at the 2026 John Reid Memorial Tournament, the left-handed shot scored five goals and six assists for 11 points. Dernisky dropped three goals and three assists in four games with Team Red at the 2026 BC U16 Cup. Saskatoon's 15th overall pick from the year prior, Kain Martiniuk, will also make his WHL training camp debut. The 6-foot forward missed last year's camp to begin his second season with Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota. In 50 games, Martinuik finished fourth in team scoring with 29 goals and 32 assists for 61 points, tacking on 68 penalty minutes as well. The Peachland, BC native signed with the Blue and Gold on March 30 this year. Martiniuk attended Hockey Canada's U17 Development Camp last month.

Other prospects slated to attend include: Harvey (32nd overall in 2026), who led all CSSHL U15 Prep League defencemen in scoring last season with 40 (16G, 24A) in 29 games; Noah Fowler (24th overall in 2025), who finished second in team scoring with 36 points (12G, 24) on the CSSHL's St. George's School U18 Prep; and Max Hartel (221st overall in 2025), who produced one of the best statistical seasons ever recorded by a goaltender in the U18 Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL). Notable omissions from camp rosters include the Blades second pick of the 2026 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft Yegor Gusev, 2007-born forward Hayden Harsanyi, and 19-year-old defenceman Isaac Poll. Gusev and the organization are currently working with his agency on the necessary immigration requirements for his arrival in Canada. Harsanyi is recovering from an injury, while Poll continues to recover from offseason surgery. View the full 2026 Training Camp roster below.

2026 DEVELOPMENT CAMP SCHEDULE All 77 players are split evenly into four teams. Each team is named after a Blades alumnus who played during a different period throughout the club’s history. This year’s four teams are Team Belak, Team Green, Team Chappell, and Team Makarov. All four teams will play for the Kirkness Cup throughout the weekend, in memory of the late Bobby Kirkness. The longtime dressing room attendant for the club passed away in 2021 after a battle with cancer. As he fought leukemia in 2016, the team renamed the training camp tournament the Kirkness Cup. Round-robin scrimmages begin at 3:00pm on Friday with Team Belak versus Team Green. Team Chappell and Team Makarov close Day 1 with a scrimmage at 4:45pm. Saturday features the remainder of round-robin play from 9:30am to the final game at 6:15pm. The Kirkness Cup Third Place Game is Sunday at 9:00am, followed by the Kirkness Cup Championship Game at 12:00pm. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.

Blades goalie coach Harvey captures gold at 2026 Hlinka Gretzkly Cup

Saskatoon, SK - Saskatoon Blades goaltending coach Jeff Harvey helped Canada capture gold at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup on Saturday. Canada ran rampant in the tournament going a perfect 5-0, highlighted by a dominant 8-1 win over the USA in Saturday’s final. The victory marked Canada’s 26th gold medal at the tournament. Saturday was also the first meeting between Canada and the USA in the gold medal game since 2013. The Blades want to congratulate Jeff and Team Canada on the tournament win!

Blades bring home familiar face Sobry from Cougars

Saskatoon, SK - A familiar face is back with the Blue and Gold. The Saskatoon Blades have acquired 20-year-old defenceman Tyrone Sobry from the Prince George Cougars in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 Western Hockey League Prospects (WHL) Draft. “We were informed on Friday that Tristan Doyle would be leaving for NCAA, so we immediately inquired about adding Tyrone back," said Blades president and general manager Colin Priestner. "Our coaches felt he was exactly what our defensive core needed as a 20-year-old. He plays hard, simple hockey and is extremely well liked in our room. He will be a strong shutdown presence for us this year.” The 6-foot-2 blueliner was acquired by the Blades on October 14, 2025 in a trade with the Prince Albert Raiders. Sobry recorded three goals, four assists, and 20 penalty minutes in 29 games with Saskatoon last season. The left-handed blueliner was acquired by the Cougars at last year's trade deadline, where scored one goal and three assists in 28 games. Sobry added a shorthanded goal, an assist, and a +1 rating in 12 playoff games with Prince George last spring. In 144 career WHL games, the Saskatoon native has seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points. "It's good to be home," said Sobry. "I can't wait to be back in the Blue and Gold."

The right-shot defenceman scored 11 goals and 42 assists for 53 career points, tacking on 746 penalty minutes as well, Beloved by fans and his teammates, Belak was a crucial piece in one of the club's most successful eras in franchise history. The Saskatoon native helped the Blades reach Game 7 of the Western Hockey League (WHL) final in 1994. In 16 playoff games, Belak scored a pair of goals and assists to go along with 43 penalty minutes, ultimately falling short to the Kamloops Blazers. The Quebec Nordiques drafted Belak the same summer 12th overall at the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. The gritty blueliner went on to have a journeyed NHL career, playing 549 games between the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, and Nashville Predators. Belak sadly passed away on August 31, 2011, but his passion and devotion as a member of the Blades is still felt by lifelong fans and former teammates to this day. Mike Green - Before he was scoring 31 goals as a defenceman in the NHL, Mike Green was a staple on the Blades' backend in the early 2000s. The Calgary, AB native played four full seasons for Saskatoon between 2001-05, scoring 39 goals and 135 assists for 174 points in 267 games. In the summer of 2004, Green was selected 24th overall by the Washington Capitals in the NHL Entry Draft. The right-shot defenceman captured the Calder Cup with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Hershey Bears in his first pro season in 2006. Green scored three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 21 playoff games en route to an AHL Championship. The retired pro enjoyed a 15-year NHL career with the Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, and a brief two-game stint with the Edmonton Oilers. Green played in 880 NHL games and scored 150 goals and 351 assists for 501 career points. Clayton Chappell - The organization was devastated to hear of Clayton Chappell's passing last August. The Langham, SK native's tenure with the Blue and Gold was short but impactful. Chappell was loved by his teammates and feared by his competitors. Chappell played 27 games with Saskatoon in the 1987-88 season, registering four goals, five assists, and 27 penalty minutes. Chappell went on to be a force in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) with the Weyburn Red Wings for two seasons. In 1989-90, Chappell recorded 79 points (17G, 62A) and 276 penalty minutes in 68 games with Weyburn. Chappell's love for hockey and Saskatchewan continued throughout his life, playing hockey for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the early 90s and senior hockey with the Dalmeny Fury of the then FCHL in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The mantra is "Once a Blade, always a Blade," and Chappell carried what it meant to be a Blade throughout his life, whether in his love for hockey or farming. Andrey Makarov - There's many names that come to the mind of Blades fans when it comes to elite goaltenders in franchise history. One who made his mark in recent memory was Andrey Makarov. The Kazan, RUS product played two seasons with the Blades between 2011-2013. Makarov's 66 career wins puts him seventh all-time in franchise history, while his nine shutouts are the third most amongst all Blades netminders all-time. Makarov went 66-38-7 with a .916 save percentage (SV%) and 2.82 goals against average (GAA) in two seasons with Saskatoon. The netminder was awarded Outstanding Goaltender of the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup on home soil at SaskTel Centre. The then 20-year-old Russian made 120 saves, many of them spectacular, in just four games. Makarov played pro from 2013-2024 around the globe, including the AHL and Kontinential Hockey League (KHL).

Blades claim Petersen off waivers, fill third 20-year-old spot

Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatoon Blades claimed 2006-born forward Tristan Petersen off Western Hockey League (WHL) waivers on Tuesday from the Penticton Vees. “Tristan brings a bit of everything to our lineup," said Blades president and general manager, Colin Priesnter. "Fred Harbinson really raved about his character and his willingness to get into the dirty areas. He brings size, speed, and toughness. We think offensively he has really nice upside, as he was a regular on the Vees’ first line last year. We’re really excited to welcome him to the team.” The 6-foot-2 Danish winger played 63 games in his first WHL season last year with Penticton. Petersen scored 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points. The 20-year-old represented Denmark at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship in December, scoring a goal and an assist in five games. Petersen is the club's third overage player ahead of the 2026-27 season, joining forward Hunter Laing and defenceman Tristen Doyle. The Blades want to welcome the Petersen family to the organization and look forward to seeing Tristan in the Blue and Gold.

Blades strike second deal of the day, acquire pair of picks from Wheat Kings

Saskatoon, SK – The Saskatoon Blades acquired a pair of Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospect Draft picks from the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday in exchange for 2008-born goaltender Ryley Budd. The picks include a 2029 third-round pick and 2027 eighth-round selection. The deal came two hours after Saskatoon acquired a conditional draft pick in 2027 from the Vancouver Giants for defenceman Derek Thurston. "With the signing of Martin Psohlavec and a deep bench at the goaltending position, we felt this was a good move to get Ryley to a spot where he can be a regular," said Blades president and general manager Colin Priestner. "We thank Ryley for everything he did for our club and the communities of Saskatoon and Calgary through his Be A Budd program and wish him nothing but the best!" The Calgary, AB native appeared in 11 games with the Blue and Gold last season. Budd went 4-4-1-0 with a .888 save percentage (SV%) and 3.08 goals against average (GAA).

Blades acquire conditional draft pick from Giants for Thurston

Saskatoon, SK – The Saskatoon Blades have acquired a conditional draft pick in the 2027 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for 20-year-old defenceman Derek Thurston. "Derek went through an extremely difficult year with grace and positivity, and both parties felt it was better for him to continue his journey recovering in his hometown of Vancouver," said Blades president and general manager, Colin Priestner, "We sincerely hope he will get back to the ice soon where he belongs." Acquired by the Blades in October 2025 from the Red Deer Rebels, Thurston scored one goal and one assist in 12 games with the Blue and Gold. The 131-game WHL veteran has ten goals and 16 assists for 26 points in his career. The Blades want to thank Derek for his contributions to the city of Saskatoon and wish him nothing but the best out west!
