Vaughan shuts down York-Simcoe
The wild card entry Vaughan Kings got the better of the York-Simcoe Express on Friday afternoon, giving themselves a chance to advance to Saturday’s quarter-final round.
Carter Kostuch (4) netted the game-winner 5:38 into the third period as Vaughan improved to 2-2.
Ryan Kovacevic (1) had a two-point game, scoring a goal and an assist as Stefan Chukharev (1) and Vasily Serov (1) also found the back of the net.
Kostuch earned BARDOWN Player of the Game honours for Vaughan. Goal-scorer Isaac Oldenhof (1) was York-Simcoe’s MVP. Blueliner Rylan Singh (2) provided York-Simcoe’s other goal.
The Kings await the outcome of an afternoon clash between the Toronto Jr. Canadiens and Sun County Panthers to discover their fate. They’ve been led offensively by Kostuch, who has put up eight points (4-4–8) in four outings. York-Simcoe finishes the OHL Cup with a record of 1-2-1, being led in scoring by Owen Griffin (4-1–5), who is a top prospect for the 2023 OHL Priority Selection.
