U18 Worlds Primer: Chase Stillman (Sudbury Wolves)
Having played in the shadow of Quinton Byfield with the Sudbury Wolves in 2019-20, Chase Stillman looks to continue his steady play on the international stage as a member of Canada’s National Under-18 Team. Stillman, who led Wolves rookies with 34 points (13-21–34) in 58 games, is one of nine OHL forwards on the Canadian roster as they try and get Canada back to the top of the podium at the U18 Worlds for the first time since 2013.
ONE THING CHECKED OFF THE LIST
Stillman wasted little time scoring his first career OHL hat trick, lighting the lamp three times in just his sixth regular season game as the Wolves defeated the Peterborough Petes 9-6 on Oct. 4, 2019. His strong rookie season built off an impressive 2018-19 campaign when he was named both Great North Midget League Rookie of the Year and Northern Ontario Hockey Association Player of the Year with 55 points (19-36–55) in 24 games with the Sudbury Wolves U16 team.
DELIVERING IN DENMARK
Stillman suited up with Denmark’s Esbjerg U20 squad in the absence of OHL play, putting up 16 points (9-7–16) over eight contests. He was briefly accompanied there by Anaheim Ducks prospect and Barrie Colts blueliner Mathew Hill.
FAMILY TIES
Stillman played for his father, former 16-year NHL vet and two-time Stanley Cup champion Cory Stillman during his rookie season. The elder Stillman has since taken an assistant coaching position with the Arizona Coyotes following three seasons at the helm in Sudbury that included a Central Division title. Chase’s older brother Riley Stillman was recently dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks after three years in the Florida Panthers system. Riley Stillman hoisted the Robertson Cup with the 2018 Hamilton Bulldogs and also spent parts of four seasons with the Oshawa Generals. Additionally, Stillman’s grandfather is former long-time pro and OHL head coach Bud Stefanski who served as an assistant with the Wolves during the 2018-19 season.
Stillman and 12 other OHL players will hit the ice in Plano and Frisco, Texas on April 27th when Canada opens its tournament schedule against Sweden.
