Thursday Highlights: Trout turning heads

Scouts in attendance in St. Catharines on Thursday night were treated to an outstanding display from three of hockey’s brightest young stars.
The draft eligible trio of Michael McLeod, Nathan Bastian and Alexander Nylander combined for a total of 10 points as the Mississauga Steelheads downed the Niagara IceDogs 5-3.
The three ‘A’ rated prospects on NHL Central Scouting’s recent November Players to Watch List pulled the Steelheads into a first place tie with Barrie in the Central Division as the Steelheads became the first Eastern Conference team to eclipse the 100-goal mark.
The Mississauga win came in one of three games around the league on Thursday.
MISSISSAUGA 5 NIAGARA 3 – The Mississauga Steelheads strung together their third straight win as a fine performance from draft eligible prospects Michael McLeod, Nathan Bastian and Alexander Nylander fueled a 5-3 victory. Nylander led the way with two goals and two assists while McLeod had two goals and an assist to go with Bastian’s three helpers on the night. Goaltender Jack Flinn made 28 saves while rookie Ryan McLeod also found the back of the net for Mississauga. IceDogs star Josh Ho-Sang extended his current point streak to 17 games with a goal and an assist in the loss.

FLINT 4 WINDSOR 3 OT – The Flint Firebirds overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 in overtime on Thursday. Defenceman Mathieu Henderson’s fifth goal of the season came just 35 seconds into the extra frame as the Firebirds won for the seventh time in their last 10 games. Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was a difference maker making 29 saves while Nicholas Caamano, Zack Pittman and Josh Wesley all had two assists. Draft eligible Spitfires defenceman Mikhail Sergachev earned first star honours with his eighth and ninth goals of the season in the loss. Hayden McCool had a goal and an assist for the Spits who suffered their third straight loss.

KINGSTON 6 PETERBOROUGH 2 – The Kingston Frontenacs sent a strong message in an East Division showdown with the Peterborough Petes on Thursday. A goal and two assists from Florida Panthers prospect Juho Lammikko put an end to Peterborough’s six game winning streak as the Fronts took a 6-2 road victory. Rookie Jason Robertson continued his strong play with a goal and an assist for Kingston while fellow rookies Ryan Cranford and Robbie Burt also scored. The Frontenacs outshot the Petes 43-29 to take a three point lead in the East Division, boasting a 17-8-1-1 record.
