The Guelph Storm improved to 2-1-1-0 under new head coach Jarrod Skalde on Sunday as sophomore forward James McEwan netted his first OHL hat-trick in a 7-3 win over the Kitchener Rangers.
The Storm earned a point against the Erie Otters and defeated the Peterborough Petes prior to Sunday’s victory over Kitchener as the club has taken a step forward of late.
Veteran goaltender Michael Giugovaz made 43 saves as the Storm defeated a division rival in one of six games around the league.
GUELPH 7 KITCHENER 3 – The Kitchener Rangers suffered just their second regulation home ice loss of the season as Guelph Storm sophomore James McEwan netted his first OHL hat-trick in a 7-3 decision. Draft eligible forward Givani Smith had two goals and an assist for the Storm while overage netminder Michael Giugovaz made 43 saves as his club was outshot 46-22. Veteran forward Jacob Harris had three assists in the win while captain C.J. Garcia pitched in with two helpers. Kitchener forward Adam Mascherin registered an assist to extend his current point streak to 11 games. The Storm improve to 2-1-1-0 under newly named head coach Jarrod Skalde.

NORTH BAY 5 BARRIE 3 – The North Bay Battalion fired back at the Barrie Colts after Saturday’s 12-2 loss as Mathew Santos scored twice in a 5-3 home ice win. Veteran goaltender Jake Smith bounced back from a short night on Saturday with 35 saves while 19 year-old forward Aaron Dart scored in his OHL debut as the Troops overcame a 2-0 deficit to claim victory. Barrie had goals from Justin Scott, Anthony Stefano and Kevin Labanc.

MISSISSAUGA 1 OTTAWA 0 – Jack Flinn prevailed in a goaltending duel on Sunday in Mississauga, making 27 saves to record his league-leading sixth shutout of the season in a 1-0 blanking of the Ottawa 67’s. Jason Smith’s fifth goal of the season was the winner 13:12 into the second frame as the fish finished the weekend one point back of Barrie for first place in the Central Division. Ottawa goaltender Leo Lazarev made 23 saves in the club’s third straight loss.

WINDSOR 7 SAGINAW 1 – The Windsor Spitfires continue to roll, winning their third straight game on Sunday as Christian Fischer (2-1–3), Hayden McCool (1-2–3) and Cristiano DiGiacinto (1-2–3) all had three points in a 7-1 win over Saginaw. Rookies Luke Boka and Kyle Auger each scored their first OHL goal while netminder Mario Culina turned aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced. Dylan Sadowy provided Saginaw’s lone goal in the loss.

ERIE 2 HAMILTON 1 – The Erie Otters edged the Hamilton Bulldogs in a low scoring affair for the second time in as many days. Draft eligible wingers Kyle Maksimovich and Taylor Raddysh scored third period markers as the Otters defeated the Bulldogs 2-1. Hamilton goaltender Charlie Graham made 35 saves in the loss as the Bulldogs were outshot 37-21 on home ice. Otters goaltender Devin Williams made 20 saves to improve to 26-2-1-0 on the season in Erie’s fifth straight win.

SAULT STE. MARIE 4 FLINT 2 – Overage forward Gabe Guertler led the way with two goals as the Soo Greyhounds doubled up the Flint Firebirds 4-2. Blake Speers and Tyler Hore each had two assists while goaltender Joseph Raaymakers made 26 saves. Dane Johnstone and Mathieu Henderson scored for the Firebirds who suffered their fourth straight loss.
