Quine Selected Second Overall at the 2009 OHL Priority Selection
When the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds announced Friday afternoon that they would be selecting Daniel Catenacci with the first overall selection at the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, the focus shifted Saturday morning to the Kingston Frontenacs who had the opportunity to announce their newest addition, Alan Quine, with the second overall pick.
Quine, a 5’10” forward from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, scored 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 35 games. His scouting report reads a very smart, two-way center who is effective in all three zones of the ice. He is an excellent skater that possesses a very smooth stride. He reads the play exceptionally well and seems to always get into a space where he can contribute and influence what is happening on the ice.
"It is a tremendous honour to be selected and I am looking forward to playing for the Frontenacs" said Quine, who had the opportunity to tour the city of Kingston and the rink on Saturday morning. "The city is amazing, very historic, it will be fun to play in Kingtson and the rink is really nice – it’s like a mini NHL arena" added Quine.
The Kitchener Rangers had the third overall selection and picked offensive defenceman Ryan Murphy of the York Simcoe Express. The Express produced a trio of players selected in the opening round including Murphy, the first overall selection Catenacci, and Barclay Goodrow who went 17th overall to the Eastern Conference Champion Brampton Battalion.
Boone Jenner was selected fourth overall by the Oshawa Generals. Jenner competed for the 2009 OHL Cup finalists, the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs. Defenceman Justin Sefton was taken fifth overall by the Sudbury Wolves. Sefton just recently won a Midget National Championship with the Notre Dame Hounds at the Telus Cup.
The 2009 OHL Cup Champion Toronto Marlboros led the way with four first round selections including tournament MVP Lucas Lessio who was taken seventh overall by the Niagara IceDogs. He was followed by former teammate Ryan Strome who was selected eighth overall by the Barrie Colts. Brett Ritchie went 12th overall to the Sarnia Sting, and defenceman Stuart Percy was grabbed by the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 15th overall.
The Belleville Bulls took the only goaltender selected in the first round when they picked Tyson Teichmann of the Quinte Red Devils with the 18th pick. Other OHL Cup participants taken in the first round include David Broll of the Toronto Young Nationals who was selected 10th overall to the Erie Otters, Carter Sandlak, a product of the London Jr. Knights program, was taken 11th by the Guelph Storm, and Anthony Camara of the Mississauga Senators went 14th overall to the Saginaw Spirit.
Matthew Puempel (sixth overall to the Peterborough Petes), Curtis Crombeen (ninth overall to the Owen Sound Attack), Garrett Meurs (13th overall to the Plymouth Whalers), Cody Ceci (16th overall to the Ottawa 67’s), Scott Harrington (19th overall to the London Knights), and Austen Brassard (20th overall to the Windsor Spitfires) completes the first round selections.
