OHL Playoff Roundup: Sunday
Here are the results of OHL Playoff action on Sunday:
Saginaw Spirit 6 vs. Guelph Storm 5
Vincent Trocheck scored twice including the game-winner and added an assist for the Saginaw Spirit as third star of a 6-5 win over the Guelph Storm to advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals for the second time in franchise history.
The Storm did not exit Game six quietly scoring three straight goals in the third period including one by first star Michael Latta who capped off a four-point night with his hat-trick goal at 18:04 to bring the Storm to within one.
The Spirit withstood the pressure with help from netminder Mavric Parks who made 33 saves to earn the win.
With a 2-2 score after 20 minutes the Spirit pulled ahead in the middle frame with three second period goals from Jordan Szwarz with his fourth of the series, with Dalton Prout and Ivan Telegin netting their first of the post-season. Trocheck put the Spirit ahead by four early in the third period with his fourth of the playoffs.
The Storm also received third period goals by veterans Sam Lofquist and Peter Holland who each netted their third of the playoffs.
Josh Shalla was named the game’s second star with four assists.
Erie Otters 6 vs. Windsor Spitfires 5 OT
Brett Thompson scored the overtime winner at 8:51 of the extra frame to extend the series for the Erie Otters who force a Game seven Tuesday night against the Windsor Spitfires.
The Windsor Spitfires came flying out the gates in a wild first period where both teams combined for 59 shots on goal. The Spits led 3-0 with Taylor Carnevale contributing two goals.
The Otters chipped away at the Spitfires’ lead in the second period scoring two goals in 26 seconds beginning with Anthony Luciani at 3:29 then Brett Cook at 3:55. Stephen Johnston netted his fourth of the series at 4:27 before Luciani scored his second of the game and seventh of the series at 18:53 to make the score 4-3 after two periods.
The Otters built on their momentum in the third period with Phil Varone tying the game on the power play at 6:49 before Derek Holden gave the home team their first lead of the game at 10:56. Defenceman Adrian Robertson tied the game late for the Spits with his second goal of the playoffs at 16:01.
Varone and Luciani assisted on Thompson’s game-winner to give them both four-point games as second and third stars of the game respectively.
Ramis Sadikov made 48 saves in the win while Jack Campbell stopped 61 shots despite the loss.
The Spitfires host Game seven Tuesday night at the WFCU Centre.
Owen Sound Attack 1 vs. London Knights 0
Robby Mignardi broke 58 minutes and 19 seconds of shutout hockey with the lone goal of the contest, his fourth of the series, to lead the Owen Sound Attack to a six-game series win over the London Knights.
Michael Zador earned the shutout in goal and second star honours for the Attack with 23 saves and did not allow a goal in his two starts to clinch the series.
Michael Houser was named first star of the game between the pipes for the Knights with 38 saves.
The Attack await their second round opponent which would be the Plymouth Whalers should they defeat the Kitchener Rangers on Monday night. If the Rangers prevail, the Attack would face the winner of the Game seven matchup between the Windsor Spitfires and the Erie Otters.
