OHL Playoff Roundup: Monday Night
Here are the results from OHL Playoff action on Monday night:
Guelph Storm 7 vs. Saginaw Spirit 3
Michael Latta of the Guelph Storm scored two goals and an assist as first star of a 7-3 win over the Saginaw Spirit to take a 2-1 series lead.
The teams traded two goals in the first period with Taylor Beck and Latta scoring for the Storm while John McFarland and Micky Sartoretto replied for the Spirit.
The Storm scored three unanswered in the second period beginning with a power play marker by Beck at 2:51 for his third of the series. Both Daniel Erlich and Sam Lofquist followed with their second of the series.
Ryan O’Connor would score an early third period goal to cut the Storm lead to 5-3 but Latta and Peter Holland made us of power play opportunities for the Storm to put the game out of reach.
Brandon Foote made 37 saves to record the win, while Mavric Parks started in goal for the Spirit and stopped 14 before being removed in favour of Tadeas Galansky midway through the second period. He would also stop just 14 shots.
Game four of the series takes place Thursday night back in Guelph.
Windsor Spitfires 6 vs. Erie Otters 2
The Windsor Spitfires broke a 2-2 second period tie with four unanswered goals to skate to a 6-2 in over the Erie Otters to take a 2-1 series lead.
Ryam Ellis scored the game-winning goal at 17:12 of the middle frame for his second of the series. Jeff Brown and Brady Vail opened the second period with two goals just 32 seconds apart at 1:14 and 1:46. Kenny Ryan netted Windsor’s sixth goal of the game.
Zack Kassian recorded two assists and was named the game’s first star.
Shawn Szydlowski and Mike Cazzola scored the goals for Erie.
Jack Campbell claimed third star honours with 30 saves in the win. Ramis Sadikov took the loss for the Otters allowing five goals on 33 shots before Christopher Festarini entered in relief and allowed one on seven shots.
Game four of the series will be played in Erie on Wednesday night.
Kitchener Rangers 3 vs. Plymouth Whalers 1
Ryan Murphy finished the game with two points including the game-winning goal just one minute into the third period as second star of a 3-1 win for the Kitchener Rangers over the Plymouth Whalers.
The Rangers grabbed their first win of the series and still trail the Whalers 2-1 with Game four set for Wednesday night in Plymouth.
Jerry D’Amigo opened the scoring with his third goal of the series at 7:40 of the second period. Alex Aleardi replied with the lone goal for the Whalers at 13:30.
Gabriel Landeskog scored an empty-netter to put the game away in the game’s final minute.
Brandon Maxwell earned the win and first star honours with 35 saves including a crucial third period penalty shot stop on Tyler Brown. Scott Wedgewood continued to play well for the Whalers making 45 saves.
Sudbury Wolves 5 vs. Ottawa 67’s 3
The Sudbury Wolves fired 53 shots on goal Monday night scoring five to take a 2-0 series lead over the Ottawa 67’s.
Andrey Kuchin continued his strong offensive play with a three-point game for the Wolves scoring twice and adding an assist as first star of the game giving him eight points in two games.
The game was tied 2-2 after the second period when the 67’s got a shorthanded goal late in the frame by Tyler Toffoli with just nine seconds left.
After a Michael Sgarbossa goal at 4:26, Charlie Dodero scored the game-winner for the Wolves past Petr Mrazek on a penalty shot at 5:49 of the third period.
Sgarbossa, who now has nine points in two games to tie for the OHL playoff lead, had a goal and two assists in this contest.
Sean Monahan and Marc Zanetti each picked up goals for Ottawa.
Alain Valiquette won his second straight game needing just 15 saves, while Mrazek was busy with 48 saves despite the loss.
Game three goes tonight in Sudbury.
