Konopka Wins OHL Faceoff Award
Toronto – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Zenon Konopka of the Ottawa 67’s won the OHL Face-Off Award for the 2001-02 season.
Konopka, the 67’s captain, won 1,564 of the 2,040 face-offs he took this season for a winning percentage of 76% to capture the OHL Face-Off Award. This is the fourth time an Ottawa player has won the award in the past five years. Dan Tessier won the award for the first three years that it was presented from 1997-98 to 1999-2000.
Konopka, 21-year-old native of St. Catharines, scored 18 goals and 68 assists for a career-high 86 points in 61 games.
He received 53 points in the voting process, while runner-up Brad Boyes of the Erie Otters received 44 points and Matt Ellis of the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors was third with 32 points. Teams were not permitted to vote for players from their own hockey club.
The OHL Face-Off Award winner is voted on annually by OHL member team coaches and general managers. A first place vote received five points, a second place vote received three points and a third place vote received one point.
