Friday Highlights: Hats take flight on busy night
NIAGARA 6 – SARNIA 5 – OT
The Niagara IceDogs overcame a 5-1 deficit, scoring four times in the final 38 minutes of regulation to knot the score at five before Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Sam Miletic (21, 22, 23) put an end to things 2:27 into overtime. The thrilling 6-5 victory saw Vegas Golden Knights prospect Ben Jones tally five assists, the most by an IceDogs player in a single game since Freddie Hamilton on March 4, 2012 against Erie. Miletic’s overtime winner completed a hat-trick as he finished the night with three goals and an assist. Kirill Maksimov (26), Danial Singer (21) and Johnny Corneil (13) also found the back of the net while draft eligible forward Akil Thomas picked up three helpers. Niagara outshot Sarnia 52-35, going 3-for-6 on the power play. Sarnia’s Jordan Kyrou (24, 25) had another strong effort, scoring twice while adding an assist. Other Sting goals came from Sean Josling (17), Cam Dineen (13) and Adam Ruzicka (27). Sarnia sees its seven-game winning streak snapped but earned a point in the OT loss. The IceDogs improve to 25-14-4-2, one point back of first place Barrie in the Central.

MISSISSAUGA 4 – PETERBOROUGH 3 – OT
2018 NHL Draft prospect Ryan McLeod (16, 17) tied the score at three with 4:35 left in the third period before banging in the overtime winner 2:38 into the extra frame as the Mississauga Steelheads edged the visiting Peterborough Petes 4-3. McLeod finished the night with three points while other Trout goals came from Nicolas Hague (24) and Trent Fox (15). Emanuel Vella earned his third consecutive win with a 25-save effort as Mississauga took the shooting column 38-28 and went 2-for-4 on the power play. Owen Tippett recorded an assist in the win to stretch his current point streak to 13 games while Michael McLeod also had a helper to extend his to 11. Peterborough picks up a point as Pavel Gogolev (18), Gleb Babintsev (1) and Chris Paquette (13) were goal-scorers. Dylan Wells made 34 saves in the loss as the Petes sit at 18-23-3-3 on the year. The Steelheads pick up a third straight win to improve to 21-24-0-1.

NORTH BAY 6 – OTTAWA 5 – SO
The Ottawa 67’s climbed back from down 5-2 to tie things at five but shootout markers from Adam McMaster and Adam Thilander gave the North Bay Battalion a 6-5 road win. Daniel Walker (6, 7) had two goals and an assist for the Battalion, opening up a 2-0 lead before Ottawa tied the score at two on tallies from Sam Bitten (7) and Tye Felhaber (15). Brandon Coe (5), Luke Moncada (6) and Justin Brazeau (30) put the Battalion back in the driver’s seat in the second period before Ottawa charged back to tie thanks to a pair of goals from San Jose Sharks prospect Sasha Chmelevski (20, 21) and another from Jacob Cascagnette (11). North Bay’s Moncada finished the night with a career high four points including a goal and three helpers. Ottawa captain Travis Barron had three assists on the night. The Battalion have now won eight of 10, improving to 21-20-5-1 while Ottawa gets a point to sit at 19-21-3-3, two points ahead of fifth place Peterborough in the East Division.

GUELPH 5 – FLINT 3
Isaac Ratcliffe’s (23, 24, 25) first OHL hat-trick propelled the Guelph Storm to a 5-3 win over the visiting Flint Firebirds. Ratcliffe added an assist for four points on the night while Alexey Toropchenko (8) and Cedric Ralph (17) also lit the lamp. Cam Hillis tallied three assists while Arizona Coyotes prospect Nate Schnarr picked up two helpers. Goaltender Anthony Popovich stopped 36 of 39 on the night as the Storm stayed within four points of second place London in the Midwest Division. Sophomore forward Connor Roberts (11, 12) scored twice for Flint while Jalen Smereck (6) also converted. Ty Dellandrea and Maurizio Colella both had a pair of helpers while rookie Eric Uba recorded his first OHL point with an assist in the loss. The Firebirds managed to outshoot the Storm 39-38 but fall to 13-28-3-1 on the campaign.

HAMILTON 4 – ERIE 3
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Nicolas Mattinen (6, 7) scored twice to lift the Hamilton Bulldogs over the Erie Otters 4-3 on the road. Marian Studenic (15) and Ryan Moore (14) also scored for Hamilton as the Bulldogs let 4-1 after two. Erie goals from Aidan Timmermans (1) and Chad Yetman (4) cut the deficit to one before time ran out on the Otters. Ivan Lodnia (20) also scored for Erie as they were outshot 28-22. Matthew Strome collected two assists for the Bulldogs as they earned their third straight win, improving to 30-10-3-3. The Otters have now lost four in a row.

LONDON 7 – OWEN SOUND 4
Ottawa Senators prospect Alex Formenton’s (13, 14, 15) first OHL hat-trick headlined a 7-4 London Knights win over visiting Owen Sound. Overage forward Tyler Rollo (9) joined Formenton with four points on the night, tallying a goal and three assists while other London markers came from Liam Foudy (9, 10) and Connor McMichael (7). A night after recording four assists to earn Player of the Game honours for Team Cherry in the Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, Evan Bouchard did it again, tallying four helpers while registering a plus-5 rating on the night. The Knights managed to win despite being outshot 42-24 as goaltender Joseph Raaymakers turned in a 38-save performance. Owen Sound goals came from Jackson Doherty (4), Aidan Dudas (21), Brett McKenzie (12) and Nick Suzuki (24). The Knights improve to 26-17-2-2 while Owen Sound sees a three-game winning streak snapped.

SAULT STE. MARIE 6 – WINDSOR 4
It was more of the same from Morgan Frost in Sault Ste. Marie as the Philadelphia Flyers first round pick tallied three assists in a 6-4 win over the Windsor Spitfires. Veteran forwards Boris Katchouk (33, 34) and Tim Gettinger (25, 26) both scored twice in the back-and-forth game that saw the Hounds take a 4-0 lead before the Spitfires climbed back to within a goal. Gettinger fired home the game winner 7:45 into the third period as the Greyhounds climbed to 38-5-2-1 on the season. Taylor Raddysh (20) also scored for Sault Ste. Marie while veterans Noah Carroll and Hayden Verbeek each had two assists. Jake Smith (10, 11) scored twice for Windsor while Cole Purboo (16) and Luke Kutkevicius (5) also chipped in with singles. Curtis Douglas and Connor Corcoran both registered two assists as the Spitfires remain tied with third place Saginaw in the West Division at 23-18-2-2 on the year.

KITCHENER 6 – SAGINAW 2
Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Kole Sherwood (18, 19, 20) sent the hats flying at The Aud, finishing with four points in a 6-2 win over the visiting Saginaw Spirit. Ryan Stepien (6) opened the scoring for Saginaw 1:54 into the opening period before the Rangers proceeded to score five consecutive and put things out of reach. Eric Guest (5), Riley Damiani (16) and Adam Mascherin (31) picked up additional tallies while Logan Brown recorded three assists in his Rangers debut. Mascherin finished the night with four points, scoring once while adding three helpers as Kitchener won big despite being outshot 33-31. Mason Kohn (13) also scored for Saginaw as the Spirit fell to 23-18-4-0 to sit tied for third with Windsor in the West Division. The Rangers earn their fifth straight victory and lead the Midwest by 10 points over second place London.

KINGSTON 4 – OSHAWA 1
Gabriel Vilardi (6) and Jason Robertson (28) each had a goal and an assist while goaltender Jeremy Helvig made 26 saves as the Kingston Frontenacs defeated visiting Oshawa 4-1. Linus Nyman (23) and Tyler Burnie (16) added goals as the Fronts improved to 3-1 against the Generals this season. Sean Day pitched in with two assists as the Frontenacs outshot the Gennies 31-27. Oshawa’s Domenico Commisso (13) ended Helvig’s shutout bid with just 3:55 remaining as Kingston climbed six points ahead of third place Oshawa in the East Division.

BARRIE 6 – SUDBURY 3
The Sudbury Wolves pitched a third period comeback attempt but the Barrie Colts managed to hang on for a 6-3 road win. Lucas Chiodo (15, 16) scored the game winner 4:04 into the third period, putting the Colts up 4-1 before a pair of Blake Murray (13, 14) goals brought Sudbury within one. Chiodo hit the empty net inside the final minute before Jaden Peca (9) followed suit. Aaron Luchuk (37), Jason Willms (21) and Andrei Svechnikov (20) also tallied Barrie goals while blueliner Joey Keane recorded a career-high four assists. Barrie outshot Sudbury 42-37 as goaltender Leo Lazarev turned in a 34-save performance. Kirill Nizhnikov (8) also scored for the Wolves in the loss as they fell to 13-28-6-0. The Central Division leading Colts have won five of six against Sudbury this season.
