Sixteen year-old rookie Sasha Chmelevski completed a second period hat-trick in a span of just 6:08 as the Sarnia Sting skated to a 5-2 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Friday. The native of Northville, Michigan went to the dirty areas on Friday, finishing on all three of his tallies from the goalmouth.
The Sting are now 6-2-1-0 on the season, with Chmelevski currently ranked third in OHL rookie scoring with five goals, one assist and six points in nine contests.
The Sarnia victory came in one of eight games around the league on Friday.
SARNIA 5 SAULT STE. MARIE 2 – Sasha Chmelevski was just 1:05 shy of Nathan Lafayette’s 1992 all-time franchise record (Newmarket Royals) of 5:03 for fastest three goals by one player as he led the Sarnia Sting to a 5-2 home ice win over the Soo Greyhounds. Chmelevski struck three consecutive times in the second period to put the game out of reach as the Sting now have points in each of their last five games. Noah Bushnell and Josh Jacobs each had two assists in the win while blueliner Alex Black recorded a goal and an assist. Sault Ste. Marie’s Hayden Verbeek earned second star honours as he accounted for both Greyhounds goals on the night.

KINGSTON 4 PETERBOROUGH 3 SO – Jason Robertson and Conor McGlynn scored shootout markers before Lucas Peressini slammed the door on Greg Betzold to secure a 4-3 Kingston Frontenacs shootout victory over Peterborough. The Petes managed to earn themselves a point thanks to a late powerplay goal from Eric Cornel to force overtime. Both goaltenders were busy on Friday as Peterborough’s Dylan Wells made 46 saves in the loss while Peressini earned first star honours, kicking aside 29. The Frontenacs have started the season with a 5-1-1-1 record through their first eight games and are winners of three straight.

KITCHENER 3 OWEN SOUND 2 OT – He had some help from the post, but Adam Mascherin’s sixth goal of the season was the difference maker as the Kitchener Rangers outlasted the Owen Sound Attack in a 3-2 overtime victory. Mascherin beat Owen Sound’s Michael McNiven from down his off-wing finishing on a feed from Dmitrii Sergeev to improve the Rangers to 4-0-3-0 on the year. Overaged winger Brandon Robinson had a goal for the blueshirts in his first game of the season after recovering from hip surgery. Owen Sound goals came from former Ranger Josh Sterk and sophomore Jonah Gadjovich. After making 38 saves in Barrie on Thursday, Michael McNiven had another busy night in the Attack crease, turning aside 45 shots in the loss to earn second star honours.

ERIE 7 OSHAWA 4 – The Erie Otters took a Robertson Cup Final rematch against the Oshawa Generals 7-4 on Friday as Jake Marchment’s first OHL hat-trick came just down the road from his hometown of Courtice. Nick Betz had a goal and two helpers while league leading scorer Alex DeBrincat and fellow sophomore Taylor Raddysh both added a goal and an assist. Defenceman Jordan Sambrook recorded his first multi-point game with a goal and a helper. The Otters remain the CHL’s only unbeaten team with an 8-0-0-0 record.

FLINT 7 OTTAWA 4 – The first two OHL goals from defenceman Vili Saarijarvi helped make the Flint Firebirds’ inaugural Pink Out a smashing success as they defeated the Ottawa 67’s 7-4, putting an end to their five game winning streak. The Firebirds overwhelmed Ottawa in the first period, staking themselves to a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes. Will Bitten had four assists on the night while Connor Chatham had a goal and an assist as the Firebirds improved to 5-3-0-1. Sam Studnicka and Jeremiah Addison both had a goal and an assist for the 67’s.

LONDON 4 SAGINAW 1 – Aaron Berisha continued the strong start to his overaged season with a pair of goals while Tyler Parsons made 33 saves in a 4-1 London Knights victory over the Saginaw Spirit. J.J. Piccinich and Owen MacDonald also found the back of the net while Christian Dvorak had a pair of assists. The Knights improve to 5-1-1-1 on the year with the win while Saginaw slides to 2-4-0-1.

WINDSOR 2 GUELPH 1 – Rookie goaltender Michael DiPietro turned aside 36 shots while goals from Bradley Latour and Aaron Luchuk got the Windsor Spitfires back in the win column with a 2-1 triumph over the Guelph Storm. Garrett McFadden’s first of the year was the lone goal for the Storm in the loss. Windsor’s DiPietro leads all OHL goaltenders with a 1.47 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage through four starts.

SUDBURY 3 NORTH BAY 1 – Jake McGrath made 37 saves for first star honours in an OHL debut he won’t soon forget. The 2015 OHL Cup Champion paced the Sudbury Wolves to their second win of the season, a 3-1 victory over the North Bay Battalion. Alan Lyszczarczyk opened the scoring for Sudbury with his first OHL goal on an assist from David Levin before Danny Desrochers and Chad Heffernan would also score in the win. Zach Bratina’s 10th goal of the season was the lone marker for the Troops on Friday.
