Decade in Review – 2009-10:
Following a wild ride through the OHL Playoffs that included overcoming a 3-0 series deficit to come back and defeat the Kitchener Rangers in the Western Conference Final, the Windsor Spitfires became the eighth team in CHL history to win back-to-back Memorial Cup titles.
Head Coach Bob Boughner’s Spitfires blasted the tournament host Brandon Wheat Kings 9-1 to open the proceedings and 9-3 in the Championship Final as a start-studded lineup that included Taylor Hall, Ryan Ellis and Adam Henrique among others solidified itself as one of the greatest teams in the history of the Ontario Hockey League.
The 2009-10 season was the stage for the Taylor/Tyler showdown between Windsor’s Hall and division rival Plymouth’s Tyler Seguin as both players finished the season atop the OHL scoring race with 106 points apiece. Hall would be drafted first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2010 NHL Draft, with Seguin going one pick later to the Boston Bruins.
At the World Juniors, Canada saw its five-year run of gold come to an end as the United States prevailed on an overtime winner from former London Knights defenceman John Carlson for a 6-5 final in Saskatoon, Sask.
Notable players from the OHL’s graduating class of 2009-10 include aforementioned names such as Hall (Windsor Spitfires/Arizona Coyotes), Seguin (Plymouth Whalers/Dallas Stars), Henrique (Windsor Spitfires/Anaheim Ducks), Jeff Skinner (Kitchener Rangers/Buffalo Sabres), Cam Fowler (Windsor Spitfires/Anaheim Ducks), Nazem Kadri (London Knights/Colorado Avalanche) and Robin Lehner (Soo Greyhounds/Chicago Blackhawks).
