Canada drops U-18 opener
Anthony Stewart (Kingston Frontenacs) scored two goals, but it wasn’t enough as Canada lost 5-3 to Russia in the opening game of the World Under-18 Championships in Yoroslavl, Russia.
Jeff Carter (pictured) of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds added a goal and an assist for Team Canada, which features eight Ontario Hockey League players.
Canada held a 2-0 lead heading into the third period before Russia scored three times in the final 11 minutes for the win.
“It’s a world championship so you have to realize that everyone’s going to be a top-level team,” coach Mike Kelly told The Canadian Press. “We’re going to have to be patient with our game and take a few things we’ve learned from this game an implement them. We’re obviously looking to improve on this.”
Canada’s next game is on Monday against the Czech Republic.
