Owen Sound, ON – The Owen Sound Attack, in partnership with the Bluewater Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to announce that the 3rd Annual Bears in Blue game for Mens Cancer Awareness raised $34,500 this past Saturday night.
The live jersey auction following the game against the Knights brought in almost $16,000 while the sale of special toques and mittens, Celebrity Serve at Boston Pizza, silent auction and other donations accounted for the remaining funds.
The Attack also honored their former coach and friend, Mark Reeds prior to the game on Saturday evening. Following a touching tribute on the video board, Mark’s wife Mary, son Kyle and daughter Kelsey were on hand to drop the puck, along with honorary Chairman and Prostate Cancer survivor Fred Wallace, all of whom received a lengthy standing ovation prior to the game. Many members of Mark’s extended family were on hand in the crowd to support the initiative.
“The outpouring of support for this event was heartwarming on a number of levels.”, stated Brent Fisher, Director of Marketing and Public Relations. “Mark was a very dear friend of everyone in our organization and it was an honor to have his family on hand Saturday evening. It meant a lot to the people in our organization and fan base that they were able to be here.”
Through events such as Bears in Blue and Pink in the Rink, Saturday’s success brings the grand total of funds raised by the Attack and Canadian Cancer Society to a staggering $220,500.
“We are very lucky to have such an amazing partnership with The Attack and their fans, the events have evolved over the years raising money for different types of cancer. The 3rd Bears in Blue proved to be one of our most successful initiatives yet.”, says Jen Wright, fundraising specialist with the society. “Everything from donations to our bucket pass and silent auction to the highly anticipated live jersey auction, it is a fun evening raising funds for prostate cancer research.”
