Thursday Highlights: Tomasino puts up five-point night in Generals debut

Nashville Predators first rounder Philip Tomasino put up two goals and three assists for five points in his debut with the Oshawa Generals Thursday night, guiding them to a 6-3 win over the Windsor Spitfires. Rookie Wyatt Johnston (4) found the back of the net just seconds into the game, giving the Spits a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. Brett Neumann recorded his 30th goal of the season to tie things up before Dallas Stars pick Curtis Douglas (14, 15) potted two in a row to regain the Spitfire lead. The Gens responded with five straight in the final period off the sticks of Ty Tullio (17), Montreal Canadiens prospect Allan McShane (16), Brett Harrison (12), and newly acquired Tomasino (23, 24), who capped off the win with a shorthanded empty netter. The Gens smash a four-game losing streak, earning their first win since Dec. 28, and see their record improve to 19-13-3-2 while they remain in the East Division’s middle spot. The Spits’ record falls to 24-9-4-0, but they maintain their spot atop the Western Conference with 52 points.

Christian Purboo secured his second career OHL shutout, fifth-year vet Macauley Carson netted two goals, and top NHL Draft prospect Quinton Byfield got on the scoreboard in his first game back as the Wolves blanked the Barrie Colts 4-0. Carson (11), NHL Draft eligible Jack Thompson (10), and Byfield (23), who returned to the lineup after winning a gold medal with Team Canada’s World Junior team, all scored within the game’s middle frame, before Carson (12) notched one more in the final period. Overager David Levin registered three helpers on the night while Buffalo Sabres prospect and former Colt Matej Pekar, who was traded to the Wolves just this week, picked up an assist on Byfield’s goal, earning his first point in his debut with the squad. Purboo stopped all 25 saves that came his way, while Jet Greaves stopped 28 of 32 attempts between the pipes for Barrie. The Wolves continue to lead the Central Division with 41 points and a 20-18-1-0 tally, while the neighbouring Colts fall to 16-17-2-1 and tie both the Mississauga Steelheads and Niagara IceDogs for 35 points. The Wolves improve to 5-0 against Barrie this season.

Kai Edmonds recorded a 29-save shutout and NHL Draft prospect James Hardie put up three points (2-1-3) in his 100th OHL game as the Mississauga Steelheads blanked the North Bay Battalion 6-0. Nicholas Canade (11) and fifth-year OHL vet Calvin Martin (11) both potted their eleventh goals of the season before Hardie (17), Ty Collins (8), and Richard Whittaker (13) struck in the middle frame. Hardie (18) wrapped up the win in the final period with his second goal of the night. The Fish put 40 shots on Battalion rookie netminder Joe Vrbetic, who finished the night with 34 saves. The Steelheads’ two points earned ties them with the Niagara IceDogs and Barrie Colts for 35 points on the year as they bump up to third place in the Central Division. The Troops’ record drops to 9-28-2-0 at the bottom of the Central.

Logan Morrison netted a hat-trick as his Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Niagara IceDogs by a lopsided score of 7-1 Thursday night. The Bulldogs saw four in a row off the sticks of Tag Bertuzzi (18), Morrison (16, 17), and Michael Renwick (3), before fourth year winger Oliver Castleman (16) finally got Niagara on the board midway through the game. Morrison (18) completed the hat-trick about a minute and a half later, and third period goals from Bertuzzi (19) and captain Isaac Nurse (9) capped off the win. Andrew Maclean turned aside 25 of 32 shots in his IceDogs debut, while Zachary Roy totaled 27 saves on the night. Niagara falls to 15-17-4-1 on the season, tied with the Barrie Colts and Mississauga Steelheads for 35 points in the Central Division. Hamilton improves to 18-19-2-0 and remains fourth in the East Division. The IceDogs honoured former captain and franchise cornerstone Akil Thomas prior to puck drop, recognizing him for his recent accomplishments with Canada’s National Junior Team.

The Owen Sound Attack skated to their third straight win as they defeated the Peterborough Petes 5-2 on the road Thursday night. Attack rookie Kaleb Lawrence (2) and fourth-year OHLer Matthew Philip (16) struck first, before Peterborough’s Nick Robertson (24), a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, cut the lead to 2-1. Deni Goure (6) and Adam McMaster (12) followed up with two more for the Attack, and Robertson (25) cut the lead once again with his second marker. An empty netter from Barret Kirwin (18) sealed the win within the game’s final seconds. Hunter Jones totaled 22 saves on 26 shots between the pipes for the Petes, while Mack Guzda finished the night with 26 saves to his name. The Petes, who have now lost four straight, dropping to 25-12-2-1 on the year, but remain second in the East Division, five points below the 67’s. The Attack jump to fourth in the Midwest and see their record climb to 18-15-3-2.
