Thursday Highlights: Kammerer secures Sting victory in overtime

 

SARNIA 5, NORTH BAY 4 OT
Colton Kammerer connected with Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jamieson Rees for the overtime winner in North Bay, securing a 5-4 win for his Sarnia Sting. Rookie netminder Benjamin Gaudreau was solid in front of a hometown crowd making 28 saves to backstop the Sting to victory. Sophomore Sting skater Nolan Burke (3) found the back of the net first, halfway through the opening period, and Mitchell Russell (19) gave the Troops some life early in the middle frame. Joseph Mack (5) reclaimed the Sarnia lead 43 seconds later but North Bay jumped in front off two quick goals from Luke Moncada (29) and Paul Christopoulos (4). NHL Draft prospect Jacob Perreault (32) and rookie Ty Voit (6) gave the Sting their third lead of the game until Kyle Jackson (7) brought the Troops up to speed, forcing overtime. After drawing a delayed penalty, Rees fed the puck to Kammerer (4) in the slot for the overtime marker at the 2:13 mark. The Battalion outshot the Sting 32-21, suffering their eighth straight loss to fall to 11-38-3-0 at the bottom of the Central Division. The Sting, who sit at the bottom of the West Division, see their record improve to 18-29-5-1 with a much needed win.

WINDSOR 7, PETERBOROUGH 3
Nashville Predators pick Egor Afanasyev (23) put up a goal and a pair of assists in the Windsor Spitfires’ 7-3 road win over the Peterborough Petes. He capped off an initial 6-0 lead in the second period, following goals from Luke Boka (15), Kyle McDonald (13), overager Cole Purboo (18), rookie Ruben Rafkin (3), and Vegas Golden Knights prospect Connor Corcoran (17). The Petes scored a trio to open the final frame, with two from Zach Gallant (25, 26) and another from rookie J. R. Avon (3) to cut the Spits’ lead in half. Dallas Stars draftee Curtis Douglas (23) would add one more on the empty net in the final minute of the game. The shots ended 33-32 in favour of the Petes as Spits netminder as Kari Piiroinen turned aside 30 of 33 to secure the win. Peterborough sees its record fall to 31-20-2-1 at second in the East Division. Windsor maintains third in the West Division and fifth in the Western Conference, trailing the red hot Flint Firebirds by a point with a 30-15-5-0 tally.

BARRIE 4, NIAGARA 1
Jet Greaves shut down 33 of the 34 shots he faced between the pipes for the Barrie Colts as they defeated the division rival Niagara IceDogs 4-1 to move into second place in the Central Division. Jake Uberti’s 14th goal of the season came midway through the opening period on a power play to put the IceDogs up on the board but Barrie overager Aidan Brown (14) responded with the tying goal just two minutes later. A trio of second period goals from Ethan Cardwell (20), Josh Nelson (11), and Nathan Allensen (8), the latter of which also came on the power play, pushed the Colts up by three for a lead they’d carry to the final buzzer. The shots were an even 34-34, with Andrew MacLean rounding out a 30-save night in net for Niagara. The Colts’ record bumps up to 24-22-3-2 on the year as they wrap up back-to-back road games with a big four points, while the IceDogs remain fourth in the division and see their record fall to 17-31-4-1 with a 10th consecutive loss.
