Sunday Highlights: Offence on display to close out #OHLOpeningWeek

The Niagara IceDogs and Mississauga Steelheads went head-to-head in a scoring derby on Sunday afternoon, with the visiting IceDogs coming out on top by a score of 8-6 in their season opener. Los Angeles Kings prospect Akil Thomas (1) led the way with a goal and four assists while newly acquired forward Ivan Lodnia (1, 2) scored twice and added an assist. Kirill Maksimov (1, 2) also found the back of the net twice as the IceDogs went 2-for-2 on the power play. Niagara took out a 6-1 lead before Mississauga stormed back with three straight markers to make a game of things. Keean Washkurak (1) was a standout for the Trout as he finished the afternoon with a goal and three helpers. Cole Carter (1) had a goal and two assists while draft eligible defenceman Thomas Harley recorded three assists. The IceDogs open the season on a winning note while the Steelheads close out OHL Opening Week with a record of 0-1-1-0.

PETERBOROUGH 7, OTTAWA 3
The Peterborough Petes are the first team out of the gate with a 2-0-0-0 record after defeating the Ottawa 67’s 7-3 in the nation’s capital. The Petes put home four shorthanded goals with hat-trick scorer Chris Paquette (2, 3, 4) netting a pair. Hunter Jones stopped 37 of 40 shots that came his way as the Petes won despite being outshot 40-25 while holding Ottawa to a 1-for-8 mark on the man advantage. Liam Kirk (1) and Cameron Butler (1) both scored OHL firsts while Nick Isaacson (3) also found the back of the net. Ottawa goals came from Austen Keating (2) and Matthew Maggio, who picked up his first in the OHL. The 67’s wrap up OHL Opening Week with a 1-1-0-0 record.
