Sunday Highlights: Kirwan’s big day fuels Firebirds

Luke Kirwan (8, 9, 10, 11) had four goals and an assist as the Flint Firebirds finished their three game weekend road trip on a high note, defeating the Ottawa 67’s 8-6 in the nation’s capital. Flint overcame a 6-5 deficit with three unanswered goals in the third period, shaking off losses in Peterborough and Kingston. Defenceman Mathieu Henderson (6) continued his point-per-game pace with a goal and two assists while Jalen Smereck added three helpers. Cullen Mercer (4), Ryan Moore (12) and Nicholas Caamano (7) also had goals for Flint as they outshot Ottawa 39-18. Draft eligible forward Sasha Chmelevski (6, 7) and overage veteran Patrick White (7, 8) each scored twice for the 67’s while Noel Hoefenmayer (5) and Artur Tyanulin (7) also had goals. Flint’s win sees them improve to 8-7-0-1.

KITCHENER 6 SAGINAW 5 OT
Florida Panthers prospect Adam Mascherin (9) put an end to things 2:15 into overtime, converting on an end-to-end rush to give the Kitchener Rangers a 6-5 win over the visiting Saginaw Spirit. Mascherin helped the Rangers take two points despite being outshot 40-30, finishing on a goal that will be on highlight reels throughout the season. Joseph Garreffa (3), Dylan Seitz (4), Cedric Schiemenz (1), Jeremy Bracco (9) and Dylan Di Perna (4) also had goals for the Rangers while goaltender Dawson Carty made 35 saves. The Rangers improve to 10-3-0-1 with their fourth straight win. Mike Davies (2), Kris Bennett (2), Cole Coskey (1), Hayden Hodgson (3) and Mitchell Stephens (4) responded with goals for Saginaw. The Spirit fall to 2-9-2-1. Mascherin, Seitz and Bracco all finished the afternoon with a goal and two assists.

OSHAWA 3 MISSISSAUGA 2 OT
Anthony Cirelli found defenceman Medric Mercier (3) speeding in off the rush to beat Matt Mancina 2:38 into overtime as the Oshawa Generals defeated visiting Mississauga 3-2. The assist was one of two for Cirelli on the night while Eric Henderson (5) and Danil Antropov (2) also scored for the Gens. Goaltender Jeremy Brodeur was outstanding, earning first star honours with a 41-save effort. Oshawa’s fourth win in the last five games sees them leading the East Division with a record of 9-5-0-1. Mississauga goals came from Nicolas Hague (8) and Owen Tippett (13) as the Steelheads suffer their third straight loss despite outshooting Oshawa 43-32.

The Hamilton Bulldogs got back on the winning track, erasing a four game losing streak with 4-2 win in Kingston. Draft eligible forward Matthew Strome (9, 10) scored twice and added an assist while Jack Hanley (1) scored his first OHL goal and Justin Lemcke (4) also contributed. The Bulldogs outshot the Frontenacs 33- 23, improving to 8-5-1-0 for second in the East Division. Warren Foegele (2) and Jason Robertson (5) had goals for the Fronts while Jeremy Helvig made 29 saves.

Bobby MacIntyre (7, 8) had two goals and two assists as the Soo Greyhounds took a 5-2 road win in Guelph. Conor Timmins (2), Boris Katchouk (6) and Tim Gettinger (5) also had goals as the Hounds improved to 10-5-1-0, leading the West Division with 21 points. Goaltender Matthew Villalta made 31 saves to record the win. He was beaten twice on the afternoon on goals from Guelph’s Albert Michnac (4) and Cedric Ralph (2).

NORTH BAY 6 SARNIA 4
Steve Harland (5) scored the winning goal with 1:59 remaining in the third period as the North Bay Battalion overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 6-4 win in Sarnia. The Troops had a pair of goals and an assist from veteran Brett McKenzie (10, 11) while Brady Lyle (2), Justin Brazeau (2) and Maurizio Colella (2) also found the back of the net. North Bay was outshot 37-29 as goaltender Brent Moran turned aside 33 shots, helping his club improve to 8-6-1-0 as the Battalion pull into a tie for first place in the Central Division. Sarnia goals came from Troy Lajeunesse (4), Ryan McGregor (4), Adam Ruzicka (3) and Anthony Salinitri (7).
