Sting set to launch 30th season with throwback game at Pat Stapleton Arena
The Sarnia Sting Hockey Club are proud to announce a variety of events planned to celebrate their historical 30th season including a pre-season game September 20th at the Pat Stapleton Arena, formerly known as the Brock Street Barn, the original home of the Sting.
The original franchise was granted in 1969 as one of the inaugural teams of the QMJHL. The team was located in Cornwall, Ont., and known as the Cornwall Royals. The Royals won the Memorial Cup in 1972, 1980, and in 1981.
For the 1981–82 season the team transferred to the OHL. In 1992, the franchise moved to Newmarket, Ont., and played under the name of the Newmarket Royals.
In 1994, the team was bought by the Ciccarelli brothers and moved to Sarnia where they were renamed the Sarnia Sting. The team played at the Pat Stapleton Arena (Sarnia Arena) for three seasons before completing a move to the Progressive Auto Sales Arena formerly known as the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.
Pre-Season at Progressive Auto Sales Arena
The 2023-2024 Sting pre-season will begin Monday September 4th in an early Battle of the 402 against the London Knights at Budweiser Gardens. The Sting will host a total of 3 pre-season games in Sarnia. Two of which will take place at Progressive Auto Sales Arena beginning Sunday, September 10th when the Sting host the London Knights followed by Friday, September 22nd vs. the Flint Firebirds at 7:05pm.

The early days of the Sting at Sarnia Arena hold a special place in the hearts of many members of Sting Nation. In celebration of 30 years in the Sarnia, the Sting will re-ignite that nostalgia when they host the Windsor Spitfires on Wednesday, September 20th at Pat Stapleton Arena, formally known as the Brock Street Barn. Tickets for this event are general admission with seat selection to be first come first serve. Season tickets will be given priority access to tickets during their early access window: August 15th– 28th. During this window, season ticket holders can redeem their offer online directly through their Sting MyAccount- Login. You can also redeem your offer in-person at the Box Office by providing proof of address associated with your account.
Additional 30th Season Celebration
Fans can also look forward to a additional 30th season themed celebrations and specialty items.
Anniversary as well as retro merchandise and apparel will be available in the Honeypot, throughout the 2023-24 season. While the Sting will don throwback jerseys during warmups for all games this upcoming season.
The Sarnia Sting Hall of Fame will begin to take shape beginning in the 2023-24 season. This space will see continuous updates and additions on an annual basis. The Sting will announce their last induction class in a specialty game in early 2024.
Finally, special in-game content is planned to execute throughout the game-day experience honouring and remembering proud Sting moments in history.
