Spirit add 6-foot-6 defender Bishop to back end
The Saginaw Spirit acquired 18-year-old blueliner Will Bishop from the Sudbury Wolves on Wednesday, their second move on the blueline in as many days after the club acquired overage defender Braden Haché from the Barrie Colts earlier in the week.
A 6-foot-6 right-shot defenceman from London, Ont., Bishop split the 2022-23 season between the Wolves and the NOJHL’s Espanola Paper Kings. Saginaw sent Sudbury a sixth round pick in 2026 and a 12th round pick in 2027 to complete the swap.
“We’re excited to bring a player like Will into our system,” said Spirit GM Dave Drinkill. “His size and skating open up a lot of opportunities and we look forward to helping his game develop.”
A seventh round pick by Sudbury in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Bishop recorded four assists in 34 games for the Wolves last season. He chipped in six points (2-4–6) over 17 games at the Junior A level with Espanola.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity that Spirit management has given me,” said Bishop. “I’m looking forward to meeting the team and its staff. This is going to be a very special year for the Spirit.”
Bishop will wear #4 in Saginaw, joining the Spirit for their most exciting season to date as they serve as hosts of the 2024 Memorial Cup.
