Saturday Highlights: Trout turnaround

 

MISSISSAUGA 4 – BARRIE 2
The Mississauga Steelheads have their first set of back-to-back wins this season after a 4-2 road win in Barrie. Cole Schwindt (4) and Jacob Cascagnette (4) scored first period goals before Shaw Boomhower (6) and Nicolas Hague (5) struck in the second as the Trout improved to 4-9-0-0. Barrie native Jacob Ingham made 26 saves in front of a hometown crowd, surrendering Colts goals by Kirill Nizhnikov (3) and Jason Willms (6). The defending Eastern Conference champions continue working to recover from a 1-8-0-0 start to the season and have now won three of their last four contests.

OTTAWA 11 – SAGINAW 3
A game that featured a combined six goals in the first period carried that trend the rest of the way as the Ottawa 67’s unloaded for 11 goals on the Saginaw Spirit, remaining undefeated at home in an 11-3 victory. San Jose Sharks prospect Sasha Chmelevski (6, 7, 8) led the way with a hat-trick while Mathieu Foget (5, 6) scored twice, Carter Robertson (1) had a goal and two assists and Tye Felhaber picked up four helpers. Ottawa outshot Saginaw 46-30 as Graeme Clarke (5), Lucas Peric (1), Peter Stratis (1) and Nikita Okhotyuk (2) also scored for the Barber Poles. Damien Giroux (6), Keaton Middleton (1) and Marcus Crawford (3) scored for the Spirit as they fall to 0-4-0-0 on the road this season. The eleven goals are the most in one game by the 67’s since March 16, 2003.

ERIE 5 – GUELPH 4 – SO
The Erie Otters took vengeance upon the Guelph Storm as Kyle Maksimovich and Taylor Raddysh scored shootout markers in a 5-4 home ice win. The Erie victory comes a night after the Otters came out on the short end of a 4-3 shootout decision in Guelph on Friday. The Otters managed to recover after coughing up a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes as Alex Gritz (4, 5) scored his second of the night 12:05 into the third period to tie the score at four and force overtime. Rookie netminder Anand Oberoi followed up a 26-save performance by turning aside Nate Schnarr and Alexey Toropchenko in the shootout to secure victory for the Otters. Gera Poddubnyi (5) and Maxim Golod (1) also scored for Erie while Guelph goals came from Dmitri Samorukov (2), Isaac Ratcliffe (5) and Cam Hillis (2, 3). Guelph’s Nico Daws made 23 saves in his OHL debut while the aforementioned Hillis finished the night with two goals and two assists. The Otters have won four of their last five contests and hold a 6-6-1-1 record.

LONDON 3 – HAMILTON 2 – SO
Anaheim Ducks prospect Max Jones scored in the third round of a shootout to give the London Knights a 3-2 road win in Hamilton. Joseph Raamyakers made 29 saves and stopped all three shootout opponents he faced to lead the Knights to their fourth straight win following a 1-8-1-0 start to the season. Cliff Pu (3) and Sam Miletic (3) scored London goals as the Knights outshot the Bulldogs 36-31. Marian Studenic (3) and TJ Fergus (1) scored Hamilton goals while Detroit Red Wings prospect Kaden Fulcher helped his club secure a point with 34 saves on the afternoon. The Bulldogs now sit at 6-3-1-3 on the season.

OWEN SOUND 3 – NORTH BAY 2
Zachary Roberts (3) scored the game winner 5:46 into the third period as the Owen Sound Attack overcame a 2-0 deficit to outlast the visiting North Bay Battalion 3-2. Newly acquired defenceman Brady Lyle (3) scored against his former club while the red hot Sean Durzi (8) scored shorthanded. North Bay’s Justin Brazeau (9, 10) registered yet another multi-goal performance, scoring twice in the loss while goaltender Christian Purboo made 31 saves. Battalion defenceman Adam Thilander also recorded two assists as the Troops dropped to 5-7-2-0 on the season. The Attack sit atop the Midwest Division with an 8-3-0-2 record.

SUDBURY 5 – NIAGARA 2
Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Pezzetta (5, 6, 7) recorded his first career OHL hat-trick, hitting the empty net twice in the final two minutes of regulation to give the Sudbury Wolves a 5-2 win in Niagara. Troy Lajeunesse (4) had a goal and two assists while Owen Gilhula (3) also found the back of the net. Jake McGrath turned away 39 shots to lead the Wolves to victory despite being outshot 41-30. Kirill Maksimov (6) and Ben Jones (7) scored for the IceDogs as they suffered their third straight loss. Sudbury improves to 5-8-2-0 on the year while Niagara sits at 7-3-2-1.

SAULT STE. MARIE 7 – FLINT 0
Tyler Johnson stopped all 34 shots he faced to record his first career OHL shutout as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds took a 7-0 road win in Flint. Colorado Avalanche prospect Conor Timmins recorded five assists on the night while Barrett Hayton (5, 6) and Morgan Frost (6, 7) both scored twice. The Hounds went 3-for-4 on the man advantage, using a four-goal second period to pull ahead of Flint for good. The Greyhounds improve to 10-3-2-0 while the Firebirds drop their third straight decision.
