Saturday Highlights: Clutch Kohn has Spirit soaring

 

SAGINAW 4 – KINGSTON 3 – OT
Overage winger Mason Kohn (7) scored 3:30 into overtime to give the Saginaw Spirit their seventh straight win on home ice, improving to 12-9-3-0 with their fifth consecutive victory. The Spirit are now 8-1-1-0 since adding Kohn to the lineup on November 2nd as the 20-year-old has 12 points (6-6–12) over those 10 contests. He finished the night with a goal and two helpers while Cole Coskey (12), Brady Gilmour (5) and Max Grondin (2) also scored. Cameron Lamour made 35 saves in goal as the Spirit won despite being outshot 38-30. Tyler Burnie (11) scored a first period goal for Kingston while Jakob Brahaney (3) and Jason Robertson (16) scored in the latter half of the third period to draw the score even at three. Kingston gets a point but suffers a third straight loss, falling to 12-7-2-3.

SARNIA 4 – ERIE 3
Hugo Leufvenius (10) worked a give-and-go with Sean Josling for the game winner with 3:12 left in the third period as the Sarnia Sting won their fifth straight game, defeating the Erie Otters on the road by a score of 4-3. Veteran forward Jordan Ernst (14, 15) scored twice while Drake Rymsha (12) also found the back of the net as Sarnia improved to an OHL-best 21-4-1-0. Goaltender Justin Fazio was sharp when called upon with a 32-save performance while Josling and Franco Sproviero each recorded two assists. The Otters outshot the Sting 35-27 in the loss as Taylor Raddysh (12, 13) scored twice, giving him 100 regular season goals on his OHL career. Alex Gritz (6) brought down the Teddy Bears with a redirection in the slot 12:25 into the first period while defenceman Owen Headrick had an assist to push his point streak to nine games. Erie falls to 10-12-2-1 in the Midwest Division.

SAULT STE. MARIE 8 – PETERBOROUGH 3
A 3-3 game early in the second period quickly got out of hand as the Soo Greyhounds added five goals in the latter half of the contest to defeat the visiting Peterborough Petes 8-3 for their 11th straight win. The decisive win is Sault Ste. Marie’s second eight goal effort in as many nights as veteran wingers Jack Kopacka (13, 14) and Tim Gettinger (14) both had three points. Keeghan Howdeshell initiated the flight of the Teddy Bears with 3:32 left in the opening frame before Ryan Roth (5), Conor Timmins (3), Hayden Verbeek (9) and Joe Carroll (3) proceeds to add other Greyhound goals. The Hounds outshot the Petes 44-20, going 2-for-5 on the power play to improve to 20-3-2-0 on the campaign. The Petes opened up a 2-0 lead on a pair of first period goals from Adam Timleck (9, 10) but couldn’t maintain their pace. Bobby Dow (5) also scored for Peterborough as the Petes fell to 14-12-0-1.

GUELPH 4 – OWEN SOUND 2
Outshot 45-20, a 43-save performance from rookie netminder Nico Daws led the Guelph Storm to a 4-2 win in Owen Sound as the 16-year-old earned his first OHL victory. Givani Smith’s (1) first goal of the season proved to be the game winner while Isaac Ratcliffe (12), Cam Hillis (11) and Cedric Ralph (8) also found the twine as the Storm improved to 12-9-1-2. Smith, Ratcliffe and Hillis all had a goal and an assist while veteran rearguard Garrett McFadden had a pair of helpers. Jonah Gadjovich (11) and Alan Lyszczarczyk (6) scored for Owen Sound as the Attack fell to 13-9-0-2.

HAMILTON 6 – OTTAWA 2
The Hamilton Bulldogs claimed their eighth win in the past 10 games as Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matthew Strome (12, 13) made the highlight reel with a pair of goals and an assist in a 6-2 win over visiting Ottawa. Rookie winger Navrin Mutter (1, 2) scored the first two goals of his OHL career and came a goal post away from a hat-trick while new acquisition Nicholas Caamano (13) scored in his Bulldogs debut. Brandon Saigeon (11) also lit the lamp while Ben Gleason followed up a Friday night hat-trick with a pair of assists. Rookie winger Arthur Kaliyev picked up an assist to extend his current point streak to 10 games. The Bulldogs outshot the 67’s 30-23 as goaltender Kaden Fulcher made 21 saves. Oliver True (3) and Graeme Clarke (7) scored for Ottawa as the 67’s went 2-for-2 on the power play. Rookie forward Jack Quinn made his OHL debut as the 67’s fell to 13-11-1-1 with their third straight loss. Hamilton improves to an Eastern Conference-leading 14-6-2-3 through 25 games.

NIAGARA 5 – MISSISSAUGA 3
The Niagara IceDogs overcame an early 2-0 deficit as Bradey Johnson (2, 3) and Liam Ham (2, 3) both scored twice in a 5-3 home ice win over Mississauga. Akil Thomas (6) also found the back of the net while Kirill Maksimov had a pair of assists and Stephen Dhillon made 26 saves. The IceDogs went 2-for-6 on the power play and won despite being outshot 29-24. Owen Tippett (4), Nicolas Hague (13) and Trent Fox (8) all scored for the Trout as they fell to 11-12-0-1. The IceDogs are back on the rise, collecting a point in a third straight game while improving to 11-8-3-2.

OSHAWA 7 – BARRIE 3
The Oshawa Generals spread the scoring around, rebounding from a home ice loss on Friday with a 7-3 road win in Barrie. 2018 NHL Draft prospect Serron Noel (13) led the way with a goal and two assists while Allan McShane (10), Domenico Commisso (6) and Matt Brassard (1) all had a goal and an assist. Jack Studnicka (7), Hayden McCool (1) and Renars Krastenbergs (8) also scored for the Gennies while Eric Henderson collected three assists. Oshawa snaps a three-game slide as Cole Ceci made 36 saves in goal. The Colts took the shooting column 39-33 as Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Alexey Lipanov (9) had a goal and two assists. Joey Keane (5) and Zach Magwood (13) also scored for the Colts as they fell to 13-7-2-1.
