Petes add big blueliner Matthew Jenken
The Peterborough Petes added 6-foot-4, 200Ib. 18-year-old defenceman Matthew Jenken in a trade with the Flint Firebirds on Monday.
The former 17th overall pick in the 2022 OHL U18 Priority Selection recorded 18 points (2-16–18) over 68 games in his second OHL season. Flint received a sixth round pick in 2026, third round pick in 2028 and a conditional fifth round pick in 2027 (Windsor’s) in the deal.
“Matthew is a big, puck moving defenceman who is solid in his own end,” noted Petes Vice President of Operations and General Manager Mike Oke. “He had a breakout season last year with 18 points, showing that he can help out offensively while still being a responsible defenceman. He’s a great addition to our group as we gear up for training camp and the 2024-25 season.”
The Ilderton, Ont. native joins a Petes blueline that will benefit from his two seasons of OHL experience. The Petes acquired another big Flint defender in Grayden Strohack back in January.
“Matthew developed into an every-game player after being selected in the U18 draft which was a pleasure to watch happen,” said Firebirds General Manager Dave McParlan. “We wish him the best in Peterborough.”
