OHL x U SPORTS: TMU Bold

Based in Toronto, Ontario, Toronto Metropolitan University is home to over 48,000 students. Established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, the University began it’s men’s hockey program in 1970. Home to one of the most prestigious rinks across the country, the TMU Bold have the great honour of playing in old Maple Leaf Gardens, now known as the Mattamy Athletic Centre. One of the most sought-after universities for OHL graduates this season, OHL alumni continue utilizing their OHL scholarship to pursue an education at this institution.

The Bold men’s hockey program had their first ever National appearance during their 2021-22 campaign, with the successful season fuelled by 18 OHL Alumni. The Bold enter the 2023-24 mid-season break playing to an 11-5 record, ranking third in the OUA West as they prepare to host the 2024 University Cup to be held from March 14-17.

Prominent OHL Alumni:

F – Bill McKenzie, 1962-65 (Toronto Marlboros)
Member of the 1962-63 undefeated OIAA Championship team and captain of the 1964-65 team. In 1965 he won Athlete Of The Year as well as the Greatest Contribution to Athletics awards. In 2003 he was first inducted into TMU’s Athletics Hall of Fame as an Athlete and was inducted a second time in 2012 as a member of the 1962-63 OIAA Championship Team.

F – Cory Konecny, 2006-11 (Oshawa/Guelph/Kitchener, 2004-06)
Played in 105 games, tallying 101 points over four seasons. 

F – Michael Fine, 2012-17 (Soo/Kingston/Saginaw, 2007-2012)
Current Associate Coach of the TMU Bold. Registered 132 points over 124 outings. 2015-16 OUA West First All-Star Team. 2016-17 First All-Star Team.

G – Brodie Barrick, 2015-17 (Sarnia, 2012-14)
Current Director of Player Recruitment and Player Services at the OHL. Spent three seasons in net with the Bold.

D – Alex Basso, 2014-19 (Belleville/Sarnia/London, 2009-2014)
Racked up 125 points over 123 games played. 2014-15 All Rookie Team, First All-Star Team. 2017-18 OUA West Defenceman of the Year, First All-Star Team, OUA West MVP, OUA Defenceman of the Year, All-Canadian Second Team. 2018-19 OUA West Defenceman of the Year, First All-Star Team, All-Canadian First Team.

F – Matt Mistele, 2016-20 (Plymouth/Oshawa/Sarnia, 2007-12. OHL/Memorial Cup Champion, 2014-15)
Recorded 144 points over 95 career contests. 2016-17 Second team All-Star. 2017-18 First Team All-Star, All-Canadian Second Team. 2018-19 First Team All-Star, OUA West MVP, All-Canadian First team, U SPORTS Most Points. 2019-20 Second All-Star Team.

Losing a season to the Covid-19 Pandemic, recorded 79 points over 54 games played. 2018-19 First Team All-Star, U SPORTS Most Goals. 2019-20 First All-Star Team.
