OHL Post-Secondary Weekly Round-Up – Oct. 8th, 2025
Opening week is finally here as student-athletes hit the ice for the start of their respective seasons! Across U SPORTS and NCAA programs, 241 OHL alumni are competing this year. Each week, we’ll spotlight three standout stories from both leagues. Here’s what’s been happening during the first week of action.
Feature Stories of the Week (U SPORTS)
UNB Reds OHL alumni shine in opening week
Ten OHL alumni found the scoresheet for the UNB Reds across their two opening-week victories. Leading the charge was Cody Morgan, who exploded for a six-point performance (3G, 3A). Luca D’Amato wasn’t far behind, tallying five points (1G, 4A) as the Reds outscored their opponents 16–4 over the week.

Windsor Lancers goaltender Max Donoso stands tall in net
Max Donoso (Ottawa 67’s/Windsor Spitfires)) was stellar between the pipes this week, stopping 78 of 83 shots across two games. That included an impressive 46-save effort (on 50 shots) in an exhibition game against NCAA No. 3-ranked Michigan State, and a 32-save performance in Windsor’s season-opening 2–1 win over York. Last season, Donoso appeared in seven games, going 5-0-0 with a .918 SV% and 2.29 GAA.
Ben McFarlane scores big for the UPEI Panthers
Ben McFarlane (Guelph Storm) opened the scoring with just 37 seconds left in regulation against Dalhousie University on October 4. The Tigers tied the game moments later, forcing overtime – but when the extra frame solved nothing, McFarlane came through again, netting the only goal in the shootout to secure the Panthers’ victory.
Feature Stories of the Week (NCAA)
Austin Elliott makes an immediate impact in NCAA debut
Fresh off his Memorial Cup–winning season with the London Knights, goaltender Austin Elliott made a statement in his NCAA debut with UMass Lowell. The freshman posted a 17-save shutout to lead the River Hawks to a 4–0 victory in their season opener, earning Hockey East Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Week honours.
Declan McDonnell scores twice in win for Niagara
In his NCAA debut, Declan McDonnell (Kitchener Rangers & Barrie Colts) scored twice in the third period for the Niagara Purple Eagles – including the eventual game-winner on the power play and an empty-net goal to seal the victory. He also registered seven shots on goal in the contest. McDonnell joins Niagara after spending the past two seasons in U SPORTS, making the transition to Division I hockey this year.
Calem Mangone starts NCAA career with four points
Freshman Calem Mangone made an instant impression for Lake Superior State University, recording a goal and an assist in his debut on Saturday before adding two more goals in Sunday’s game, including the eventual game-winner. The 2023–24 Memorial Cup champion and former Saginaw Spirit forward is coming off a stellar 83-point OHL season (33G, 50A).
