OHL Cup Memories: Strome’s big moment

Matthew Strome scored on a feed from Nicholas Pryce 3:41 into overtime to crown the Toronto Marlboros 2015 OHL Cup champions following a 3-2 win over the Don Mills Flyers.

The Marlboros captain scored his first of the showcase at just the right time, helping the blue and white win their fifth title in an 11-year span. They played to an overall record of 6-1-0-0, outscoring their opponents 24-11.

Strome was one of several eventual OHL players on the 2015 Marlboros joined by MacKenzie Entwistle (Hamilton Bulldogs/Guelph Storm), Ryan McLeod (Mississauga Steelheads/Saginaw Spirit), Ben Jones (Niagara IceDogs), Kody Clark (Ottawa 67’s), Elijah Roberts (Kitchener Rangers/Niagara IceDogs) and Kevin Bahl (Ottawa 67’s) among others.

Strome became the Hamilton Bulldogs’ first ever OHL draft pick, going eighth overall before racking up a total of 247 points (115-132–247) over 260 career regular season games between 2015-19. He hoisted the Robertson Cup with the Bulldogs in 2018.

The youngest of three Strome brothers to play in the Ontario Hockey League, Matthew was a fourth round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2017 NHL Draft and has spent the 2019-20 season between their AHL affiliate the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and the ECHL’s Reading Royals.
