Friday Highlights: Rossi stays hot as 67’s win fourth straight

OHL rookie scoring leader Marco Rossi (5, 6) stayed hot, scoring in a fourth straight game with a pair of markers to lead the Ottawa 67’s past visiting Windsor 4-1. The Barber Poles earn their fourth straight win as Sasha Chmelevski (2) and Tye Felhaber (9) added singles and goaltender Cedrick Andree made 22 saves. Rookie forward Jack Quinn recorded a pair of assists as the 67’s outshot the Spitfires 31-23. Spits forward Kyle McDonald (1) scored his first career OHL goal in front of a hometown crowd while Michael DiPietro made 27 saves in defeat. Ottawa improves to 7-3-0-0 while Windsor falls to 3-4-0-0.

LONDON 7, SARNIA 6 – OT
Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Liam Foudy put an end to a wild back-and-forth contest between Western Conference rivals, scoring three minutes into overtime as the London Knights edged the visiting Sarnia Sting 7-6. Up 5-2, the Knights saw their lead evaporate as the Sting stormed back to eventually knot things at six. Foudy’s game winner came on a highlight reel effort with assists from Connor McMichael and Matthew Timms. 2019 NHL Draft prospect Connor McMichael (6, 7) scored twice and added an assist while rookie Antonio Stranges (2) had a goal and a helper. William Lochead (1), Cole Tymkin (4) and Josh Nelson (1) added London goals. Joseph Raaymakers got the win in goal for the Knights, notching the 80th of his OHL career. The Sting come away with a point in the overtime loss as Calvin Martin (2), Jacob Perreault (5), Franco Sproviero (2), Anthony Salinitri (4), Mitch Eliot (1) and Hugo Leufvenius (2) got onto the scoresheet. The two clubs combined for 15 power play opportunities as the Knights improved to 4-2-0-0 while Sarnia drops a fourth straight decision, falling to 3-3-1-0.

BARRIE 4, SUDBURY 1
The Barrie Colts got the better of the Sudbury Wolves, outshooting them 36-29 in a 4-1 road win. Ben Hawerchuk (5) and Justin Murray (1) scored inside the final three minutes of the first period before Matej Pekar (6) and Lucas Chiodo (7) tacked on shorthanded goals within 30 seconds of each other midway through the second period. Jet Greaves earned his first career OHL win with a 28-save performance. David Levin (4) scored Sudbury’s lone marker midway through the third period as the Wolves saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. The Colts rise to 4-4-1-0 while Sudbury continues to lead the Central with a 6-3-0-0 record.

The Soo Greyhounds handed the Kitchener Rangers their first regulation loss of the season as Philadelphia Flyers prospect Morgan Frost collected three assists in a 4-1 home ice victory. Cole MacKay (4), Mac Hollowell (2), Keeghan Howdeshell (3) and Barrett Hayton (2) were Hounds goal-scorers while Zach Trott picked up a pair of assists and goaltender Matthew Villalta stopped 27 of 28. Rickard Hugg (6) scored Kitchener’s lone tally and goaltender Luke Richardson made 26 saves. The Hounds improve to 5-3-1-0 while Kitchener falls to 4-1-2-0.

NORTH BAY 5, FLINT 3
The Flint Firebirds were in it till the end, but the North Bay Battalion got a third period game winner from Adam McMaster (3, 4) to take a 5-3 road win. Justin Brazeau (6, 7) joined McMaster with two goals and two assists on the night while Brad Chenier (2) hit the open net to seal the deal, helping the Troops improve to 3-5-0-0. Christian Propp made 35 saves for North Bay as the Battalion was outshot 38-25. Ty Dellandrea (2), Hunter Holmes (2) and Eric Uba (2) scored for the Firebirds who suffered their eighth straight loss to start the season. Greg Stefan stepped behind the bench for Flint after Firebirds head coach Ryan Oulahen announced he’d be stepping down prior to Friday’s contest.

MISSISSAUGA 4, HAMILTON 3
Michael Little (4) scored the game winner with 1:29 left in the third period as the Mississauga Steelheads snuck out a 4-3 home ice win over the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Dogs outshot the Trout 15-8 in the third period, but Mississauga would prevail as Cole Carter and Ryan McLeod set-up Little for the winner, helping the Steelheads earn their fifth straight win. Nicholas Canade (1) earned first star honours with a goal and an assist while Thomas Harley (2) and Keean Washkurak (3) also found the back of the net. Los Angeles Kings prospect Jacob Ingham earned the win in goal with a 32-save effort. MacKenzie Entwistle (3), Jake Gravelle (1) and Liam Van Loon (2) all scored for the Bulldogs as the game ended with the shots even at 35 apiece. The loss sees the Bulldogs fall to 4-3-1-0.

KINGSTON 7, ERIE 4
Dallas Stars prospect Jason Robertson (10, 11, 12) matched a career-high with five points in a 7-4 win over the visiting Erie Otters. The Kingston Frontenacs winger scored three times and added two assists, pulling into the OHL goal-scoring lead while helping his club snap a four-game slide. Linemate Brett Neumann (3, 4) also got in on the fun, scoring twice and adding two assists against his former club while other Kingston goals came from Jacob Paquette (1) and Dawson Baker (1). Ian Derungs registered a pair of assists while newly acquired defenceman Anthony Aguanno picked up his first point as a Frontenac with an assist. Chad Yetman (2, 3) scored twice for the Otters while Kyle Maksimovich (5) and Maxim Golod (1) also found the back of the net. Erie outshot Kingston 31-29, going 3-for-3 on the power play to Kingston’s 2-for-4 showing. The Frontenacs improve to 3-6-0-0 while Erie falls to 1-5-1-0.

GUELPH 6, OWEN SOUND 3
The Guelph Storm keep the wins coming, earning their fifth straight victory in a 6-3 decision over visiting Owen Sound. Sophomore forward Tag Bertuzzi (3) had a goal and two assists, newly acquired forward Domenico Commisso recorded three helpers and Liam Hawel (5) had a goal and an assist as the Storm improved to 5-1-1-0. Mark Woolley (2), Alexey Toropchenko (3), Ryan Merkley (1) and Isaac Ratcliffe (7) also scored while netminder Anthony Popovich made 35 saves. It’s Guelph’s fifth straight six-goal game. The Attack outshot Guelph 38-28, getting a pair of goals from Daylon Groulx (2, 3) and one from Jackson Doherty (1) in the loss. The Bears fall to 3-5-0-0 on the season.

PETERBOROUGH 2, OSHAWA 1
2019 NHL Draft prospect Hunter Jones made 45 saves to backstop the Peterborough Petes past the rival Oshawa Generals 2-1 on the road. The Generals bombarded the Peterborough goal in the third, outshooting the Petes 16-7 but couldn’t solve Jones as Declan Chisholm’s (1) late second period marker stood as the game winner. Brady Hinz (5) also scored for the Petes as they won despite being outshot 46-25. Allan McShane (3) scored the lone goal for Oshawa as the Generals fell to 3-4-0-0. Peterborough wins a third straight contest, improving to 7-2-0-0 atop the East Division.
