Derek Smyth commits to 67’s
Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa 67’s have announced that 17 year-old defenceman Derek Smyth has officially joined the Barber Poles.
“Derek is a player who has shown continuous improvement since being drafted,” said general manager James Boyd. “He has rightfully earned a spot in our lineup with his consistent play though training camp and exhibition games.”
A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, Smyth (pronounced “SM-EYE-TH”) was drafted by the 67’s in the 11th round, 220th overall, in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. The hulking 6’4, 207lbs blueliner spent his 2019-20 campaign with the Niagara North Stars AAA program, scoring four goals and 17 assists for 21 points in 29 regular season games. Smyth also found consistent production in the postseason, with three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 13 SCTA playoff games.
During the COVID-altered 2020-21 season, Smyth spent time with the GOJHL’s Fort Erie Meteors.
Smyth appeared in all six of Ottawa’s 2021-22 preseason games.
