Colts, Troops address needs in forward swap
The Barrie Colts made a big move ahead of a Friday night trip to London, acquiring overage centreman Dalyn Wakely from the North Bay Battalion on Thursday in exchange for second-year winger Shamar Moses and two draft picks. The Troops receive Ottawa’s fourth-round pick in 2025 and Niagara’s fifth-round pick in 2027.
A sixth-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers this past summer, Wakely has been a core member of the Battalion both on and off the ice in recent years, incrementally increasing his offensive output with 20 goals as a rookie, 30 as a sophomore and 39 last season to help the Troops win three straight Central Division titles. He’s also been a pillar in the community, claiming OHL and CHL Humanitarian of the Year honours in 2022-23.
“Dalyn Wakely has done so much for this team and community that goes far beyond the on-ice element,” said Adam Dennis, president and director of hockey operations.
“While he has, without question, given us three unforgettable seasons on the ice, his impact in the community has been just as impressive. Through his charity, Wake’s Sake, and the countless hours he dedicated toward local indigenous youth groups, he’s grown the game locally probably more than he realizes. We look forward to following his career, with the exception of when the Colts play the Battalion.”
The product of Port Hope, Ont. and Curve Lake First Nation brings a reliable two-way presence down the middle for Barrie.
“Dalyn is someone we have admired for multiple seasons being on the opposite side,” said Colts head coach and general manager Marty Williamson. “We have seen him a lot throughout our matchups against North Bay and he has worked his way into being one of the most complete players in our league. Adding someone with such a high skillset and character to our group will be a big piece in building towards our goals. Having him on our side is something we’re really looking forward to and our fans should be excited about.”
In Moses, the Battalion receive a former first round (19th overall) OHL Priority Selection choice in 2023 who is hungry for a breakout as a 17-year-old this season.
“Filling Dalyn’s shoes won’t be easy, but we’re thrilled to acquire Shamar and believe he’ll fit into our program seamlessly,” said Battalion general manager John Winstanley.
“Shamar was a first-round pick last season and someone we’ve been watching closely since his U16 year. He has a high hockey IQ, plays heavy and possesses a pro shot. We’re excited to welcome him to North Bay.”
Both teams are in action on Friday, with the Colts visiting the London Knights while the Battalion are in Erie to take on the Otters.
