5 OHL Graduates Win U SPORTS University Cup Championship with UNB
Five OHL graduates are U SPORTS University Cup Champions with the UNB Varsity Reds following a 5-3 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on home ice. Here’s a look at Sunday’s Championship action from Fredericton, New Brunswick.
UNB 5 – SASKATCHEWAN 3 – CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Long-time Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Cam Braes, a graduate of the Moose Jaw Warriors, scored four times to lead the Varsity Reds to their second consecutive University Cup title, which also marks their sixth in the past 11 years.
U SPORTS Player of the Year Philippe Maillet (Victoriaville Tigres) recorded four assists while Mark Simpson (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) also found the back of the net as UNB outshot Saskatchewan 36-21.
Etienne Marcoux (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) made 18 saves in goal to improve to a perfect 3-0 mark at the University Cup while Jordon Cooke (Kelowna Rockets) made 31 saves in the loss.
Connor Gay (Saskatoon Blades) led on the scoresheet for the Huskies with a goal and two assists while Jordan Fransoo (Victoria Royals) and Kohl Bauml (Everett Silvertips) also scored.
The Varsity Reds were AUS Men’s Hockey Finalists for a second straight year before moving on to win it all at the U SPORTS University Cup.
OHL graduates Rob Hennigar (Windsor Spitfires) and Brad Good (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) served as assistant coaches with UNB.
22 CHL graduates earned U SPORTS University Cup Silver Medals with the Canada West Finalist Saskatchewan Huskies.
ACADIA 7 – StFX 3 – BRONZE MEDAL GAME
An additional nine OHL graduates are U SPORTS University Cup Bronze Medalists with the Acadia Axemen.
Daniel Pettersson (Moncton Wildcats) and Michael Clarke (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles) each scored twice to lead the Axemen to a third place finish following a 7-3 win over the AUS Champion StFX X-Men.
Boston Leier (Regina Pats), Liam Maaskant (Kitchener Rangers) and Taylor Makin (Vancouver Giants) also had goals for the Axemen as they outshot StFX 34-29.
Robert Steeves (Gatineau Olympiques) turned aside 26 shots, surrendering goals by StFX’s Sam Studnicka (Sarnia Sting), Eric Locke (Saginaw Spirit) and Nathan Pancel (Peterborough Petes).
Pettersson finished the game with two goals and two assists while Clarke had two goals and one assist, leading the Axemen to bronze.

A total of 169 CHL graduates competed across the eight teams at the 2017 University Cup Championship representing over 80% of all players in the tournament.
CHL graduates are able to compete in U SPORTS hockey programs and receive their education paid for by taking advantage of the Scholarship Programs throughout the CHL which are funded by the member clubs of the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
During the 2016-17 season more than 945 CHL alumni utilized their Scholarship Packages including over 550 graduates on U SPORTS rosters and representing a financial contribution of over $6.8 million by CHL teams.
