2016 OHL Gold Cup Day 3 Recap
Semi-Final Saturday at the 2016 OHL Gold Cup saw Team GTHL Blue and Team ALLIANCE advance to setup a rematch of last year’s Championship game. The two clubs will clash on Sunday to determine who will take OHL Gold Cup supremacy!
Here’s a look at Saturday’s top performances:
TEAM OMHA WHITE 6 (2-2), TEAM NOHA 3 (0-4) – 10:00am
Jacob Roach (SBY) had a goal and two assists while Mitchell Hewitson (OSH) scored twice and Lucas Pfeil (KIT) made 34 saves in goal as Team OMHA White doubled up Team NOHA 6-3.
Hewitson, Roach and Jackson Doherty (OS) connected for three third period goals to put the game out of reach while Isaac Emon (PBO) and Aidan Dudas (OS) also found the back of the net for the whiteshirts.
Joshua Rouleau, Chad Denault (PBO) and Dylan D’Agostino (HAM) scored for Team NOHA while Cameron Lamour (SAG) made 33 saves in the loss.

TEAM OMHA BLACK 4 (2-2), TEAM HNO 0 (0-4) – 12:15pm
York Simcoe Express teammates Richard Whittaker (LDN) and Ian MacLean (BAR) book ended the third period with a pair of goals to put a close came out of reach as Team OMHA Black blanked Team HNO 4-0.
Blair Coffin (SAR) recorded a 20-save shutout, preserved with a late second period penalty shot denial of Jacob Anttonen.
Defencemen Riley McCourt (HAM) and Mason Snell (NB) also scored for OMHA Black as they outshot HNO 53-20 in the win.
Team HNO MVP Jordan Kooy (LDN) made 49 saves in the loss.

SEMI-FINAL 1: TEAM GTHL BLUE 5 (4-0), TEAM GTHL RED 4 (2-2) – 3:00pm
Erie Otters first round selection Allan McShane put forth a performance to remember, scoring all four of his team’s goals, but in the end it wouldn’t be enough as Team GTHL Blue skated to a 5-4 shootout victory over Team GTHL Red to advance to the OHL Gold Cup Championship.
McShane’s standout showing included a first period goal followed by a natural hat-trick in the third period, scoring three times in a span of just over five minutes to put GTHL Red up 4-3.
Barrie Colts first round selection Tyler Tucker would tie the score with 5:09 left in the third period on assists from Akil Thomas (NIAG) and Ryan Merkley (GUE).
Overtime solved nothing before Barrett Hayton (SSM) proved to be the hero, scoring in the fourth round of the shootout before Christian Mattiance (KGN) denied Jack McBain (BAR) to seal the deal for GTHL Blue.
The two clubs shared a combined 19 power plays in the chippy affair as Merkley led the way to victory with three assists while Thomas and Tyler and Jesse Tucker (OS) all had multi-point performances.
Mattiace made 30 saves in goal for GTHL Blue while Joshua Eisfeld (SBY) turned aside 40 shots for Team GTHL Red.

SEMI-FINAL 2: TEAM ALLIANCE 5 (4-0), TEAM HEO 2 (2-2) – 5:15pm
A 28-save performance from Keaghan Brett gave Team ALLIANCE the solid goaltending they’d need to improve to 4-0 and advance to the OHL Gold Cup Final with a 5-2 win over Team HEO.
Team ALLIANCE bounced back from a 2-0 deficit after Merrick Rippon (KIT) and Wil Murray (LDN) scored first period goals for HEO.
The ALLIANCE stormed back with five unanswered highlighted by a goal and an assist from defenceman Holden Wale (SSM) while Tristan De Jong (BAR), Joel Mazzilli (NIAG), Eric Guest (KIT) and Eric Uba (FLNT) also found the back of the net.
Team ALLIANCE outshot Team HEO 39-30 in the win.
The win sets up a rematch of last year’s OHL Gold Cup Final as Team ALLIANCE seeks redemption against the reigning champion Team GTHL Blue on Sunday.
