2016 OHL Gold Cup Day 2 Recap
Day 2 of the 2016 OHL Gold Cup saw four teams clinch semi-final berths as Team GTHL Red, Team GTHL Blue, Team HEO and Team ALLIANCE remain in contention for the OHL Gold Cup Championship headed into Saturday’s action. Here’s a look at Friday’s six games on the schedule.
TEAM GTHL BLUE 4 (2-0), TEAM HNO 1 (0-2) – 9:00am
A pair of first round selections in Danil Antropov (OSH) and Akil Thomas (NIAG) had big showings as Team GTHL Blue defeated Team HNO 4-1. Antropov had a goal and two helpers while Thomas scored twice, helping GTHL Blue improve to 2-0 at the OHL Gold Cup.
GTHL Blue outshot HNO 55-22 in the victory as Barrett Hayton (SSM) also scored and Thomas Tinmouth (OTT) had a pair of assists.
Christian Mattiace (KGN) made 21 saves in goal to record the victory.

TEAM GTHL RED 5 (2-0), TEAM OMHA BLACK 1 (1-2) – 11:15am
A pair of goals from Maxim Grondin (SAG) helped Team GTHL Red establish a 4-0 lead on Team OMHA Black enroute to a 5-1 victory in a chippy affair that saw the two teams gain a combined 16 power plays.
Jack McBain (BAR) joined Grondin with two goals and an assist for GTHL Red while Liam Foudy (LDN) had a pair of assists and Joshua Eisfeld (SBY) made 32 saves.
Ty Dellandrea (FLNT) provided OMHA Black’s lone marker while Tanner Sheppard (HAM), despite allowing five goals, came up with numerous highlight reel saves in the loss while making 38 saves.

TEAM ALLIANCE 5 (2-0), TEAM NOHA 1 (0-3) – 1:30pm
After a scoreless first, Team ALLIANCE stormed out of the gate to take a 3-0 lead in the second period, getting great goaltending from Keaghan Brett in an eventual 5-1 win over Team NOHA.
Tristan De Jong (BAR), Joel Mazzilli (NIAG) and Brett Fisher scored in the second before Kyle Fisher (HAM) and Brady MacDonald (PBO) tacked on two more in the third period.
Brett made 30 saves in goal, being beaten just once off the stick of Noah Boman.
Team ALLIANCE took the shooting column by a tally of 43-31.

TEAM OMHA WHITE 9 (1-2) vs. TEAM HNO 3 (0-3) – 3:45pm
Matthew McNamara (PBO) (2-1–3), Dawson Baker (SBY) (1-2–3) and Jacob Roach (SBY) (0-3–3) all had three-point performances as Team OMHA White trampled Team HNO 9-3.
Isaac Emon (PBO), Matt Nastasiuk (OTT) and Jack Wismer (FLNT) scored in the first to put OMHA White up 3-1 before McNamara, Aidan Dudas (OS) and Dennis Busby (FLNT) added three more to start the second and put things out of reach up 6-1.
Baker, McNamara and Daylon Groulx (OS) would add third period markers as OMHA White outshot HNO 43-26.
Jacob Anttonen, Samuel Stevens (SAR) and Kyle Swerhun scored for HNO in the loss.

TEAM GTHL BLUE 4 (3-0), TEAM HEO 2 (2-1) – 6:00pm
Two goals from Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds first round pick Barrett Hayton helped Team GTHL Blue improve to 3-0 with a 4-2 win over Team HEO.
Ryan Merkley (GUE) and Akil Thomas (NIAG) also had multi-point games with a goal and an assist while Hunter Jones (PBO) made 31 saves to record the win in goal.
Serron Noel (OSH) and Paul Larabie (KGN) scored for Team HEO, who suffered its first loss despite 42 saves from Kai Edmonds (BAR) in goal.
The two clubs entered the third period knotted at two before power play markers from Thomas and Merkley boosted GTHL Blue to the 4-2 win.

TEAM ALLIANCE 6 (3-0), TEAM GTHL RED 5 (2-1) SO – 8:15pm
Two undefeated clubs locked horns in one of the best games of the 2016 OHL Gold Cup to date as Nathan Torchia (OSH) turned in a sensational 47-save performance before shootout goals from Eric Guest (KIT) and Brady Hinz (SAR) led to a 6-5 Team ALLIANCE victory over Team GTHL Red.
Tied at three through 40 minutes, the two clubs swapped third period goals, forcing the game into overtime where goaltenders Torchia and Jack Watson both stood tall.
Declan Chisholm (PBO) beat Torchia on GTHL Red’s first shootout attempt, but the Waterloo Wolves goaltender was flawless from there as his club wrapped up an undefeated preliminary round.
GTHL Red’s Jack McBain (BAR) took over the tournament scoring lead with two goals and an assist to give him five goals, three assists and eight points over three games. Other multi-point efforts included Giovanni Vallati’s (KIT) three assists and a goal and an assist from Matthew Falls (PBO).
Team ALLIANCE had a balanced scoring attack, with Waterloo Wolves forward Mitchell Hoelscher (OTT) leading the way with a goal and an assist.
Both teams will compete in Saturday’s semi-final round for a shot to advance to the Championship Final.
