2014 IIHF WJC – Day 6 Results
The 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship includes 55 current CHL players and five graduates competing in Malmo, Sweden. Here is a recap of Tuesday’s action:
Canada 3 vs. United States 2
First place in the Group A standings was on the line in another classic New Year’s Eve battle where Team Canada edged the United States 3-2.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Zach Fucale (Halifax Mooseheads) backstopped Canada to victory and was named Best Player making 24 saves including several big stops down the stretch.
After a scoreless first period, the United States opened the scoring early in the middle frame before Nic Petan (Portland Winterhawks) tied the game with his third straight goal for Canada.
Petan’s goal was assisted by Anthony Mantha (Val-d’Or Foreurs) for his 10th point of the tournament.
Canada pulled ahead early in the third period on a goal by Connor McDavid (Erie Otters) set-up by Bo Horvat (London Knights) and Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert Raiders).
A little over two minutes later Curtis Lazar (Edmonton Oil Kings) put Canada ahead 3-1 burying the puck off a pretty pass from Jonathan Drouin (Halifax Mooseheads).
Former Blainville-Boisbriand Armada forward Stefan Matteau put the United States within one goal in the final three minutes but Canada withstood the attack and held on for the victory.
Canada will face Switzerland in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday morning.
Sweden 3 vs. Russia 2
The host Team Sweden solidified first place in the Group B standings with a 3-2 win over Russia who falls to 2-2.
Oscar Dansk (Erie Otters) made 23 saves in goal for Sweden.
Nick Sorensen (Quebec Remparts) scored once for Sweden, with Andre Burakovsky (Erie Otters) contributing one assist.
Czech Republic 4 vs. Slovakia 1
The Czech Republic picked up their first regulation win to finish in third place in Group A following a 4-1 win over Slovakia.
Captain Petr Sidlik (Victoriaville Tigres) scored once for the Czechs, with Jan Kostalek (Rimouski Oceanic) picking up one assist.
Slovakia’s Martin Reway (Gatineau Olympiques) continued his strong offensive play with an assist for his 10th point of the tournament.
Marek Langhamer (Medicine Hat Tigers) stopped 31 shots in the victory.
Switzerland 4 vs. Finland 3 SO
Switzerland and Finland wrapped up round-robin action at the World Juniors with a six-round shootout.
Fabrice Herzog (Quebec Remparts) scored a second period goal for Switzerland.
Henri Ikonen (Kingston Frontenacs) picked up an assist on Finland’s second goal.
The Quarter-Final matchups at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship have been determined and will be played on Thursday January 2 as follows:
Russia (3rd Group B) vs. United States (2nd Group A) – 6:00 am Eastern
Czech Republic (3rd Group A) vs. Finland (2nd Group B) – 8:30 am Eastern
Switzerland (4th Group B) vs. Canada (1st Group A) – 11:00 am Eastern
Slovakia (4th Group A) vs. Sweden (1st Group B) – 1:30 pm Eastern
Germany will face Norway in the relegation round.
