U SPORTS Report: Feb. 14, 2024
A total of 228 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2024 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 14-17 in Toronto, Ont.
UNB RECORDS FIRST-EVER PERFECT U SPORTS SEASON
The UNB Reds made history over the weekend, completing a perfect regular season on Saturday with a 9-1 win over the University of Prince Edward Island, becoming the first U SPORTS hockey team to win 30 consecutive games in the process. Finishing the regular season atop all AUS point-getters with 23 goals, 27 assists, and 50 points, Ottawa 67’s graduate Austen Keating recorded a hat trick in the win, while Saginaw Spirit alumnus Brady Gilmour had a four-point showing with a goal and three assists.

QUEEN’S PREVAIL IN HOCKEY’S OLDEST RIVALRY
The Queen’s University Gaels blanked the RMC Paladins 6-0 in the Carr-Harris Cup on Thursday. The Carr-Harris Challenge Cup was initiated in 1986 by the International Hockey Hall of Fame in celebration of the hockey rivalry between Queen’s and Royal Military College which dates back to 1886, the rivalry is the longest in the world on record. OUA point-leader (17-27-44) and former Saginaw Spirit forward Dalton Duhart, as well as Kitchener Rangers alumnus Jonathan Yantsis led the way, each recording a pair of goals in the victory.

The Gaels closed out the weekend with a 6-3 win over Ontario Tech on Saturday, as Yantsis recorded a season-high four goal night. Queen’s finishes the regular season with a 19-8-1 record, tying the program’s history with 19 wins.

X-MEN BACKSTOPPED TO VICTORY
The StFX X-Men secured a two-win weekend to close out the regular season with a 16-13-1 record, securing a spot in the AUS quarter-finals. Defeating the Saint Mary’s Huskies 4-2 on Friday, the win saw contributions from Soo Greyhounds graduate Zack Trott, Owen Sound attack alumnus Matthew Philip, and former Kitchener Rangers forward Liam Hawel.
Building on a 31-save performance, former London Knights netminder Joseph Raaymakers stopped all 24 shots that came his way on Saturday, backstopping StFX to a 4-0 shutout victory against Acadia to earn StFX Athlete of the Week honours.

A PAIR OF WINDSOR WINS
The Windsor Lancers hosted both Waterloo teams over the weekend, earning back-to-back wins to close out the regular season. Defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, the 4-2 win saw a pair of goals from former Peterborough Petes blueliner Matt McNamara, while Flint Firebirds alumnus Jake Durham contributed three helpers.
The Lancers built on their winnings with a 3-2 overtime win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday as former Niagara IceDogs defenceman David Jesus and Kitchener Rangers graduate Holden Wale each found the back of the net, finishing off the regular season with a 15-11-2 record, good for fourth in the OUA West.
