2015 OHL Gold Cup to be held in Kitchener’s Activa Sportsplex

CAMBRIDGE, ON – For the third consecutive year, the future of Canadian hockey will be on display in Kitchener, Ontario for the 2015 Under-16 OHL Gold Cup.

From May 7th to 10th, teams representing ALLIANCE Hockey, Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO), Hockey Northwestern Ontario (HNO), Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA) and Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) will compete in a twenty (20) game tournament at the Activa Sportsplex to earn aspot at Hockey Canada’s Under-17 National Camp.

“We are happy to have the event in Kitchener again and working with Alliance Hockey and City of Kitchener,” said Phil McKee, OHF Executive Director. “The OHF is looking forward to what the class of 2015 has in store for us. Last year we had 35 players from the OHL Gold Cup invited to Hockey Canada’s Under-17 National Camp, and we look forward to more Ontario players representing us this year.”

Of those 35 players invited to Hockey Canada’s Under-17 National Camp from the OHL Gold Cup, 23 players cracked the Team Canada White, Red and Black rosters.

“The OHL Gold Cup features the best under-16 players in Ontario and truly is the next wave of OHL and Team Canada stars,” said David Branch, OHL Commissioner. “The OHL is proud to support this event and look forward to the action on-ice in Kitchener this May.”

The OHL Gold Cup has hosted elite prospects and 2015 National Hockey League (NHL) draft eligible players such as Travis Konecny,Dylan Strome, Mitch Marner and 2015 Team Canada World Junior Gold Medalist Lawson Crouse.

OHL Gold Cup:

The OHL Gold Cup is an annual event created to feature Ontario’s top Under-16 talent. As part of the revamped Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, the top players from the OHL Gold Cup will be invited to attend the Hockey Canada Under-17 National Camp where they will practice and compete against other players throughout Canada to earn a spot on Team Canada and compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
