2011 OHL Cup – Semi Final Recaps
The Championship Final of the 2011 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament is set for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm at Herb Carnegie Arena and will feature an all GTHL matchup featuring the Toronto Marlboros and the Don Mills Flyers.
Saturday night Semi-Final Results:
Semi-Final 2: Toronto Marlboros 6 vs. Markham Majors 0
The highest scoring team in the 2011 OHL Cup delivered again offensively as the Toronto Marlboros netted six goals and shut the door on the Markham Majors to advance to Sunday’s Championship Final against the Don Mills Flyers. Jaden Lindo cut across the middle and went upstairs on Jordan DeKort at 1:13 of the first period with his third of the tournament which held as the game-winner. Alex Fotinos picked up his fourth win of the tournament and first shutout victory. David Perklin led the Marlies offense recording his first hat-trick since early this season while adding an assist for a four-point game. “I thought we started slow, and we knew they were going to come at us with everything so I give them full credit,” Perklin said, who can’t wait to play the Flyers on Sunday before a big live crowd and a Rogers Sportsnet television audience. “They started the year as the top team but we stole that away from them for now so they will be looking for some redemption, it is going to be a good game for sure. It is pretty cool to play on TV and even more special that people from all over can watch.” Cody Thompson also had three assists for the Marlies, while Ryan Kirkup finished the tournament as the Majors’ leading scorer with four goals and two assists for six points in six games.

Semi-Final 1: Don Mills Flyers 6 vs. Toronto Jr. Canadiens 3
Just like they did in their Quarter-Final matchup the Don Mills Flyers scored in the opening minute of the game. Adam Bateman got his first of the tournament just 54 seconds into the contest when he split the defence and scored glove side past Spencer Martin. Although the Flyers dominated the early play, the Canadiens answered right back and scored on their first shot of the game when Dalton Hnatko one-timed a pass from Brandon Robinson past Charlie Graham at 3:30. The puck bounced in the Flyers’ favour soon after when a Max Domi shot hit some traffic and found the net at 7:29, and a failed Canadiens’ clearing attempt at 9:04 sent BJ Salerno in alone and he backhanded a shot glove side to make it 3-1 Flyers. Aidan Wallace’s fifth of the tournament held as the game-winner on the power play at 10:39 to make the game 4-1 and out of Canadiens reach. All four first period goal scorers finished with two-points for the Flyers, while Hnatko would add a third period goal and an assist for the Canadiens to give him nine points in six games to lead the team. “We took advantage of both our power plays in the first and the quick goal definitely helped,” said Bateman. “I give them credit for coming back in the third, they are a hard working team. Almost every game we played them in the playoffs the team that scored first won and tonight that was us.”
