Wolves Winning Streak Snapped
The Sudbury Wolves were back in action at home on Friday for a 7:35 P.M. contest against the Saginaw Spirit. The game marked the Wolves first action at home in nearly three weeks after a hard fought 6 game road trip. Despite their best effort the Wolves three game win streak was snapped as they were defeated by a score of 6-1. Despite falling short on the scoreboard the Wolves outshot the Spirit 34-30. Jake Patterson was strong in goal for the Spirit making 33 saves . With the loss the Wolves record now sits at 5-4 on the season.
Just prior to the drop of the puck, the Wolves took a few moments to pay their respects to the late BERK KEANEY, who passed away this week at the age of 90. The local sports legend announced Sudbury Wolves home games for 59 years and concluded his career on December 2, 2011. Mr. Keaney will be remembered for his passion and dedication to the Sudbury Wolves.
The Spirit came flying out of the gate in the first as Spirit forward SAM POVOROZNIOUK put the visitors up by one only 2:29 into the first frame. Spirit defenseman STEVE STRONG would find the back of the net for Spirit a minute and 20 seconds later to give Saginaw a 2-0 lead. Wolves overage forward, MICHAEL KANTOR would respond shortly after as he buried his third goal of the season to bring the Wolves within one with 12:39 remaining in the first. GARRETT ROSS would restore the Spirits two-goal lead when he scored his first of the night at the 11:44 mark of the first period. The Wolves held the edge in shots after one period by a 9-8 margin.
The Spirit did not let off the gas pedal in the second frame as it saw their first line steal the show. The games first and second stars GARRETT ROSS and VINCENT TROCHECK connected on back-to-back goals to extend Saginaw’s lead to 5-1. The second period saw both teams fire 15 shots on goal apiece.
Saginaw sealed the deal early in the third as sophomore forward JIMMY LODGE put the Spirit up by five. The third frame saw the Wolves hold the edge in shots. 10-7
The Wolves will now head down Highway 400 for a Saturday night matchup in Barrie when they face-off against the Colts. Don’t forget to tune into KFM 95.5 as STEW KERNAN will have the call of the game.

Additional Notes: The Sudbury Wolves released 18 year old rearguard TYLER PRONG this week. The Sarnia area native played in just one game during the regular season. The 6’3” right-shot defenceman was returned to the Sarnia Legionnaires of the GOJHL. Prong will remain on the Wolves’ protected list and will remain eligible to be called-up by the Wolves as an affiliate. The Wolves active roster is now down to 23 players.
