WOLVES WIN!
The Sudbury Wolves hockey team held a collective sigh of relief after their game in Brampton on Sunday as the Wolves snapped a eight game losing skid on the road with a solid 2-0 victory over the soon-to-be North Bay Battalion.
The Wolves played another picture-perfect road game minimizing Brampton’s scoring chances and keeping the shot-count low. JOEL VIENNEAU had an outstanding performance in net for the Wolves stopping all 34 shots that he faced. Brampton enjoyed no less than NINE man-power advantages! The 18 minutes in power play time provided the Battalion with ample scoring opportunities and excellent looks at the Wolves’ cage, only to have the Wolves 20-year-old net minder rob several would-be Battalion goal scorers with his quick pads and gloves.
The Wolves enjoyed five power play advantages of their own and their power play proved successful despite missing leading scorer JOSH LEIVO who sat-out Sunday’s game due to an injury sustained the night before in Niagara. BRODY SILK had an outstanding game offensively for Sudbury and scored his 9th goal of the season. CHARLIE DODERO, who had a solid game defensively and DOMINIK KAHUN assisted on the first-period marker.
In the second period, NICK BAPTISTE scored on the power play after some good work by linemates NATHAN PANCEL and MATHEW CAMPAGNA. The trio have been playing very well of late and Coach Cull gave the effective offensive unit some additional power play time and they didn’t disappoint. BAPTISTE’s goal proved to be all of the scoring that the locals needed as they hung-on for the win. It was VIENNEAU’s first shut-out performance of the season. It was also an excellent ‘rebound’ game for VIENNEAU and his teammates after letting a commanding 5-1 lead slip away with less than five minutes to play Saturday night in Niagara against the IceDogs.
Brampton outshot Sudbury 14-11 in the first, 8-7 in the second and 12-11 in the third. Total shots ended up 34-29 in favour of Brampton. The Wolves will have little time to celebrate as they hit the road this Wednesday in the Soo for a rematch with the Hounds. The Hounds lead the BELL CHALLENGE CUP SERIES 4-0 in points after a 3-1 win in the Soo and a 5-4 victory in Sudbury last Friday night.
The Wolves return home for a WEEKEND DOUBLE-HEADER against the league-leading OWEN SOUND ATTACK. The Attack’s line-up features Buffalo Sabres star forward DANIEL CATENACCI (a former 1st overall OHL draft selection of the Soo Greyhounds). The 19-year-old forward has 38 points in 26 games this season and leads the Attack in scoring. The Attack drubbed the Mississauga Steelheads today by a score of 6-1 right in Mississauga. The Attack are big and tough and love to beat teams with their outstanding speed led by forwards CATENACCI, GEMEL SMITH and CAMERON BRACE. This is Owen Sound’s one and only visit to Sudbury this season. The Wolves dropped a close 3-1 decision to the Attack back in October. Game time on Friday is 7:35. Friday’s Contest is sponsored by BM METALS.
On Sunday, the Wolves will host CONNOR MCDAVID and the ERIE OTTERS. Game time is 2:05 p.m. Hockey fans won’t want to miss seeing the 15-year-old superstar who was granted ‘special status’ by Hockey Canada in order to be drafted first overall by the Otters. The Toronto native is by far one of the most skilled forwards to ‘ever’ play in the Ontario Hockey League and he will simply ‘wow’ you with his offensive plays, speed and smarts. MCDAVID has been drawing comparisons to SYDNEY CROSBY at the same age. Don’t miss CONNOR MCDAVID and the Erie Otters this Sunday afternoon at 2:05.
Note: This is MCDAVID’s one-and-only visit to Sudbury this season. Don’t miss him. He won’t be in this league for long!!! Sunday’s game is sponsored by Q92 FM.
