Wolves Stun Colts
DOMINIK KUBALIK was the hero for the Sudbury Wolves on Friday night as the Czech Republic star forward scored two goals including the game winner with less than one minute remaining to play to help lead the Wolves to a 5-3 victory over the top-ranked BARRIE COLTS. KUBALIK also added two assists for a 4 point night.
KUBALIK,CONNOR CRISP and JACOB HARRIS were the Wolves’ top scoring line on this night as the trio combined for 11 points. CRISP, 19, staked the Wolves to a 1-0 lead after the first period as the Montreal Canadiens prospect scored a beautiful goal on a perfect passing play with centre JACOB HARRIS.
The Wolves surrendered two power play goals to the Colts in the second period and trailed 2-1 after two periods. The Colts outshot the Wolves 25-14 after two periods of play and Wolves’ goaltender FRANKY PALAZZESE was at his acrobatic best in order to keep the Wolves in the contest.
CRISP scored his second goal of the game on a perfect feed from KUBALIK early in the 3rd period but the Colts answered right back with an even strength goal to retain a one-goal lead. This is the point of the game where KUBALIK began his heroics.
KUBALIK tipped a perfect shot from captain KEVIN RAINE to tie the contest with less than 9 minutes to play. And then with just 55 seconds left, KUBALIK pounced on a rebound and made no mistake to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead. MATHEW CAMPAGNA, on a perfect feed from NICK BAPTISTE, scored into the empty net to clinch the two points for the Wolves.
Wolves’ defenceman JEFF CORBETT was outstanding on this night recording a point and a +4 rating. CORBETT made a number of solid defensive plays to prevent the Colts from mounting any kind of attack in the dieing seconds of the game. NICK BAPTISTE also won a key face-off in the dieing seconds as well.
All in all it was a big team win and the 3,685 on hand left the Sudbury Arena excited about the win and excited about the potential showed by the Wolves against the top-ranked team in the Eastern Conference.
The Wolves can also be pleased with the win knowing that DOMINIK KAHUN, DANNY DESROCHERS, NATHAN CULL, BRODY SILK and KYLE CAPOBIANCO were all missing from the Wolves’ line-up. DESROCHERS will return to the Wolves line-up on Saturday when the Wolves travel to Owen Sound. CULL will return to the Wolves line-up on Sunday when the Wolves play in Mississauga.
The Wolves are back in action on home ice on Friday, Oct. 4th when the Wolves host the Peterborough Petes at 7:30.
