Wolves Finish on Winning Note
The Sudbury Wolves closed-out the first-half of the season with a solid 3-1 road victory over the Mississauga Steelheads. The win gives the Wolves a .713 winning percentage in their last 7 games with a record of 4-1-1-1 in the month of December.
The Wolves were playing their third game in less than three days and held the Steelheads to only 21 shots. Meanwhile, the Wolves fired 30 shots on goal. The Wolves’ penalty killing was flawless once again as they killed-off three Steelhead power plays.
After a scoreless first period, the Steelheads grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Stuart Percy. The shot deflected into the net off of a Sudbury defender giving JOEL VIENNEAU little chance to make the save. VIENNEAU was solid throughout the night stopping 20 of 21 shots that he faced and was named a game star.
The Wolves would take the lead before the middle frame came to an end on goals by BRODY SILK and NATHAN PANCEL. The Wolves’ goals were scored just over a minute apart. SILK was playing in his first game back after sitting out the last 8 games due to a suspension.
MATHEW CAMPAGNA would keep his point and assist streak alive as the Mississauga native would pick up two helpers on the night giving the Wolves’ star forward 20 points in his last 11 games. The 11 game point and assist streak are the longest active streaks in the entire OHL.
JOSH LEIVO would have another stellar offensive game for the Wolves as he picked up the insurance marker in the third period. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect had an outstanding weekend with two goals and five assists for 7 points. LEIVO was named the first star of the game.
Wolves’ defenceman JUSTIN SEFTON had another outstanding defensive game and initiated a fight with newly acquired 20-year-old CRAIG HOTTOT of the Steelheads. SEFTON came to the aid of teammate MACKENZIE BRAID who was blindsided by a hit by Hottot. BRAID was able to take the hit and played another solid game at the forward position for the Wolves.
LEIVO and CAMPAGNA are now tied for the lead in team scoring with 34 points each. CAMPAGNA leads the team in assists with 26 while forward NATHAN PANCEL leads the team in goals with 17.
The Wolves will take a much-deserved break and prepare for the second-half of the season which begins on Dec. 28th when the Wolves host the NIAGARA ICEDOGS at 7:35 at the Sudbury Arena.
