Wolves Defeats Battalion
The Sudbury Wolves made the Eastern Conference playoff position race even closer on Tuesday night as they defeated the Brampton Battalion at the Sudbury Arena by a final score of 4 – 2.
Wolves forward CHAD THIBODEAU (MATHEW CAMPAGNA, NICHOLAS BAPTISTE) opened the scoring midway through the first period to give the Wolves the early 1 – 0 lead.
In the second period, the Wolves added to their lead with a goal from MICHAEL KANTOR (JOSH MCFADDEN, MICHAEL MACDONALD) and a powerplay marker from DEREK SCHOENMAKERS (MICHAEL SGARBOSSA, MCFADDEN) to make it 3 – 0 Wolves after two periods of play.
The Battalion came out strong in the third and pulled within 1 late in the frame, but JOSH LEIVO (KANTOR, SGARBOSSA) scored into an empty net to seal the win by a final score of 4 – 2.
Wolves netminder JOHAN MATTSSON had another outstanding night in goal with 42 saves for the win. His counterpart, Matej Machovsky, was also solid with 23 saves – many of which were game saving variety.
Wolves forward MICHAEL SGARBOSSA, the newly named OHL and CHL Player of the Week, extended his point-per-game streak to 19 with the two assists, and moved atop the league scoring list with 94 points.
The game’s three stars were: 1st Star – JOHAN MATTSSON, 2nd Star – CHAD THIBODEAU, 3rd Star – Matej Machovsky.
With the win, the Wolves now sit three points behind the 4th place Battalion with two games in hand.
Prior to the game, the Wolves recognized MICHAEL SGARBOSSA for his contributions to the Wolves and his OHL Player of the Month, OHL Player of the Week and CHL Player of the Week honours.
